NEW SOUTH"WALES.

London, Juno 10. Mr Dibbs in a letter to the Economist declares that there is no parallel between Canadian and Australian borrowing, as the former is raising money for public works by means of railway companies and provincial loans which does not appear in the Dominion's debt, whereas Australia borrows almost solely through her Government, and he promises to prove that the savings of the people of New South Wales, apart from borrowing in England, are very satisfactory. Referring to the assertion that his colony has raised £6,500,000 since September, Mr Dibbs remarks that onehalf of that sum was applied to the redemption of previous loans, while the colony had not previously borrowed for a considerable period. Had New South Wales expected the Baring crisis they would have financed in advance, but thoy thought that with economy they would complete the public works then in progress. He says the colony has no intention of borrowing further at present. N.Z. ATHLETES AT HOME. London, June 12. At Tuffnell Park there was a great and cordial gathering, and an enthusiastic welcome was extended to the New Zealand amateur athletic team. The grass track was in first class condition, and capable of fast time being registered. In the 100yds handicap Cuff, the manager of the team, was unplaced in his heat. In the half-mile D. Wood fell. In the 44.0yds P. Wood, who was at scratch, failed to gain a place in his heat. In the 100yds (scratch) J. Hempton was second. The time of the winner was lOsec. In the 440yds hurdles H. Batger, from scratch, finished second, time being Glsecs. The general opinion of critics is that the New Zealanders are capable of greater things later on.
