WOODBURY SCHOOL.
The animal meeting of householders was held in the schoolroom on Monday evening last, the attendance being small. Mr J. H. Dean, chairman of the outgoing committee, was voted to the chair, and read the minutes of the last annual meeting, which were confirmed. REPORT AND BALANCE-SHEET. The chairman then read the annual report and balance-sheet for the year ending March 31st, 1892, as follows : “ Gentlemen, —Your committee have much pleasure in laying before you their report of the past year’s proceedings. Meetings : The committee held 11 ordinary and 2 special meetings, with an average attendance of 4£ members. Finance : During the same period the committee have received from the Board of Education the sum of .£2B 2s 6d; this together with a balance from previous year of £5 4s making a total of £33 6s 6d. Out of this sum we have expended £2O 17s lid, leaving a balance in bank of £6 8s 7d to be carried forward to next year. In addition to this we have received for use of schoolroom, including balance from last year, the sum of £22 7s. This sum has been expended as per schedule herewith annexed. Repairs ; Various repairs have been effected during the year, but much remains to be done. We notice the board have accepted a tender for painting the woodwork on the premises. Attendance : The year opened with 104 on the roll, and closed with 97, of whom 52 were boys and 45 girls. The admissions for the twelve months were 14 boys and 16 girls, total 30, and -withdrawals 18 and 19, making a loss for the year of seven, as shown above. The daily attendance lias been more irregular than in former years, particularly in the upper classes, and the quarterly averages have in consequence declined from 86 to 72. It is only right, however, to state that the low average of the last quarter (January to March) was affected markedly by the prevalence of whooping cough in the district; and, as this epidemic is still operating disastrously upon the junior classes, it is to be expected that the attendance will continue below the normal average for some time, and that the attainment will also suffer in consequence. The school was open 446 times during the year, and the highest attendance at any one meeting was 102 and the lowest 25. Attainments : The work has progressed favorably, and the examination in December shewed the school in a very creditable state, the Inspector reporting the standard work good, and the discipline and manners very good. The committee would urge upon the parents, and especially those having children in the upper classes, to see, as far as in them lies, that their children attend with commendable regularity, so that, if possible, none may leave without having passed all the standards and attained a fair amount of sound elementary scholarship. Staff: The staff remains the same as at the commencement of the year, and the whole are giving satisfaction to the committee and householders of the district, as the Inspector’s report will bear out. The furniture of the school on the whole is in good order,” The chairman proposed that the balance-sheet as read be adopted. This was seconded by Mr Fieiield and carried unanimously. VOTES OF THANKS. The chairman then stated he had a duty to perform which gave him great pleasure, viz., propose a hearty vote of thanks to their very efficient teaching staff. This was carried unanimously. A vote of thanks to the retiring committee, coupled with the name of Mr Doan, the late chairman, was also passed unanimously ELECTION OF COMMITTEE. The election of a new committee was then proceeded with, when the following gentlemen were elected : —Messrs J. H. Dean, F. R. Flatman, Henry, Brown, Geo. Hammond, A. Gormack, John Fiefield, and Lewis Gick. A hearty vote of thanks to the chair terminated the meeting. New Committee. The new committee then sat and proceeded to elect a chairman. Mr Flatman proposed Mr Dean, the retiring chairman, who said he was sorry to decline the honour, but thought that an infusion of now blood would be better, and he was tired of it. It was then unanimously agreed that Mr H. F. Brown be chairman. It was decided that all meetings be hold on the last Saturday in the mouth at 7 pun. The fjrst meeting to be held on Saturday, 28th inst. 1 5 This ended the meeting. *
