FOOTBALL.

TIMARU M.S. V. TEMUKA D.H.S. This game was played on Saturday in the Park, Arowhenua, and resulted in an easy win for the Timaru boys by 20 points to nil. It was easy to see that the Temuka boys were outwoighted. They did not lack pluck, however, and played the uphill game cheerfully from start to finish. Seldom has a boys’ game, or men’s either, been played with less “talk.” Although the Timaru boys offered to play without Crerar, an old boy, just after the commencement of the game, yet the local lads would not hear of it, which speaks well for their pluck. The first spell was well contested, and although Crerar and Dale scored, and 7 points were thus registered for Timaru, yet Temuka did not lose heart, for they made some splendid forward rushes, headed usually by F. Storey, Brown, Grant, McCaskill, and Henry. Gore, Fenton, and A. Storey were playing very good gsmes behind the scrum. The second spell was barely started when Crerar, who was consistently fed by the other backs—.all playing rattling games —scored twice, and this seemed to have a very bad effect oil the Temuka boys’ play. Wiggs, Mcßride, and Seward r ow scored in quick succession, chiefly from loose scrums near the goal, and when the whistle blew the score stood as above. Mr D. McCaskill acted as referee, and gave every satisfaction. Altogether the Timaru boys are to be complimented on their football; they played as good a passing game as one could wish to see. In our opinion it would be hard to find a primary school team in South Canterbury able to beat them Those deserving of more special mention are Wiggs, Parr, Crerar, Dale, and Mcßride, while for Temuka the best were Storey (2), Gore, Fenton, Brown, and Palmer. UPPER WAITOHI V. PLEASANT POINT. A football match was played at tRe Upper Waitohi on Saturday between teams from the Pleasant Point and tlie local schools. Mr Baxter, chairman of the Waitohi school, kindly lent one of his paddocks for the occasion, and a very enjoyable game ensued. R. Acton captained the visitors and R. Goldstone the Waitohi lads. The first spell was very evenly contested, the whistle sounding with no score. In the second spell Stumbles, for Waitohi, got over from a scrum ou the Point line, no goal resulting, and just on call of time A. Stewart wriggled through the whole of his opponents, and scored near the posts. R. Goldstone placed a neat goal, and play ended, Waitohi 7, Point nil. For the losers little Monison distinguished himself by his plucky collaring, bringing Stewart down time after time. Acton, S. Paul, Grey, and Young were the pick of the rest. Of the winners the collaring and running of A. Stewart and J. Connell was very good, McCabe was safe at full, and W. Stumbles, J. Stewart, D. Friel, and W. Pearse played well in the forwards. Messrs Stack and Goldstone divided the light duties of umpire and referee to the satisfaction of all parties. It might be mentioned that this is the first time the Waitohi hoys have taken part in a game of football. The following wi’l represent the Temuka Football Club in the Football Tournament. in Timaru to-day -First Team : Backs, W. Russell, T. Brosnahan, and ,R. McLeod; forwards, J. Findlay (captain), J. Brosnahan, T. Gaffaney, and H. Rodgers. Second Team: Backs, W. Fenton, H. Bryan, and R. Robinson ; forwards, J. Henry, G. Barratt, W. McCallum, and H. Greaves.
