TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.
TO THE EDITOR. Maister Editor, —l ha’ena’ ha’en a palaver wi’ ye for a lang time noo, as I ha’ena a’thegither forgi’en ye for no’ helpin’ me tae thrash the toon board. But I ha’e been readin’ yer paper a’ the same, an’, altho’ I’ve been sayin’ naething I’ve been thiukin’ a lot about the ongauns o’ the majority o’ the Timaru Harbor Board. Some duel suggested droonin’ the scoondrels, an’ I diiina ken hoo Boiueuj.iy Jiasna’ ta’en the hint an’ carried oot the suggestion. The minority ha’o behaved bravely, an’, as Mr Flatman said, there is naething they can do noo but resign an’ make siccar aboot the opinion o’ the ratepayers. Of coorse the ratepayers will send them a’ back again, an’, as moral suasion is nae use tae the ithei birkiea, they’ll juist ha’e tae try them wi’ physical suasion. Mr Evans is a fine big lump o’ a fellow; he cud tak’ Mr Talbot in a’e hand an’ Mr Acton in the ither an’ rattle their heids thegither till they consented tae carry oot the wishes o’ the ratepayers; an’ that fushianless cheeky cratur Mr Gibson an’ Mr Morris wadna’ gi’e Mr Flatman muckle trouble, an’ Mr Stumbles wad easy dispose o’ Mr Tescheniaker, an’ Mr Hill wadna be lang o’ hae’n Mr Manchester joukin’ roond his bales o’ dry goods singiu’ oot “ ’Tis false, ’tis false.” Oor auld freend Mr Tripp maun be fashed wi’ saftenin’ o’ the brain. Maist likely there had been a wee drappie o’ Glenlivet aifter supper, on the occasion o’ Mr Tescheniaker’s visit, an’ Mr Tripp no’ bein’ heather-bred that wad accoont for his letter. Glenlivet gars Hielentmen fecht like deevels, but it has a different effect on Englishers. They can swill awa’ at that wishy-washy stuff they ca’ beer, but a wee drappie o’ Glenlivet is mair than they can manage. The cunnin’ loon, Tescheniaker, aifter tailin’ advantage o’ oor friend’s hospitality, tae gar him mak a fule’ o’ himsel’ an’ get tin’ a horse frae him tae cadge the district wi’, an’ because he was beat he has the cheek tae say u Confooud the district, he wadna stand in it.” It was gude for him that some o’ us didua’ ken o’ his bein’ in the district, or he wadna ha’e got oot o’t as scaithless as he did.—l am, etc., Canny Scot.
