TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A special meeting of the above was held oil Tuesday evening. Present Messrs W. 0-, Aspinall (chairman), J. Cooper, E. Brown. A. Russell, W. Storey, and P. McCaskill. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was dealt with as follows: — From the head master, re annoyance caused by larrikins hanging about the school premises. He suggested that the police be asked to look round occasionally. A list was enclosed of irregular attenders at school, special attention being drawn to one or two habitual truants. A pane of glass had been broken by one of the scholars and be asked if he should make a request for payment for replacing same. —Mr Storey stated that he had already spoken to tne police about the larriken element, and the constable had promised to give it attention. The chairman suggested that the secretary write formally to the police upon the subject, aad this course was agreed to. No resolution was passed _as to the broken pane, the damage being a trifling one. It was resolved to recommend the new committee to take vigorous measures to ensure attendance. The Elucafcion Board wrote covering a resolution to the effect that Mr Farnie had been appointed to the Geraldine school, and was expected tc take over Mr Aitken's duties on the Wednesday after Easter. As there would be a difficulty in getting a properly qualified, man to take the locum tcnemMjt for some seven months, the Board proposed to send Mr W. Laurence Edge, M.A., to take over the school during Mr Bryars' absence on leave. The committee were asked whether there was any objection to the course proposed. .Mr Farnie forwarded his resignation, which was accepted. Miss Philips, the headmistress, applied for leave of absence for live weeks, oa the grounds of continued ill-health. A medical certificate from Dr. Hayes was enclosed, stating that Miss Phillips's illness would necessitate some six weeks rest. Miss Phillips asked that her request might be endorsed by the committee and forwarded to the Education Board.—lt was resolved that Miss Phillips's request be acceded to, and the committee expressed their sincere regret that the application was necessary. The secretary was also instructed to inform the Board that Miss Russell, a fo "?er teacher, had acted as locum, tene/m tot Miss Phillips previously, and her appointment a«ain to the position would be satisfactory to the committee if approved of by the board. The acting head master wrote covering summary of attendance returns for the past quarter, and enclosed a cheque for £2 ( Js tid for fuel and stationary fees. He also forwarded a medical certificate to the effect that he was suffering from, a severe cold, and unable to attend duties for a few The chairman stated that Mr Farnie had been away from school for three days, and that Mr Low had had entire charge. He thought Mr Farnie should have formally notified the committee that he was unable to attend. . Mr Storey stated that Mr Farnie had sickness in his house, which would pro - baldv account for the neglect. After a Xitfcle discussion the secretary was requested to write to Mr Farnie, and ask for an explanation. EASTER HOLIDAYS. It was resolved to close the school on Thursday evening, and re-open on Monday 2otb. THE ANNUAL MEETING. The Education Board notified by circular that the annual meeting of householders would be held on Monday April 27th at the. school. The attendance being oyer "400, the school was entitled to nine representatives on committee. Nominations must be in the form prescribod by the Act, and forwarded to the chairman not latter t'lan Monday April 18th. The election would have to be conducted in manner prescribed by the amended Act. Copies oJ nomination forms were enclosed. The Secretary was instructed to write for a copy of the new Act, and for further supply of nomination papers. ACCOUNTS. Several accounts were held over until the ordinary monthly meeting. The meeting then terminated.
