CHRISTCHURCH STOCK MARKETS. At the Addington yards on Wednesday there were fair entries of stock. Store Sheep—4ooo yarded, and in consequence prices were hardly up to late rates. Good sorts of young ewes not over six-tooth sold at from 11s Gd to 13s Bd, full mouthed ewes brought from 9s lOd to 11s 2d, and aged ewes from Gs 3d to 8s 9d. Only two small lines of wethers were sold, viz., two-tooth halfbreds at 12s 9d and aged at 8s 9d. Merino ewes sold at 3s lid to 5s 3d, according to quality, and one line of merino wethers went at 5s Gd. Fat Lambs —7OO yarded, most of which ifent for the export trade at 10s to 12s 3d, a few beipg sold for less for store purposes, the butchers haying evidently given up buying lambs. Fat Sheep—6ooo yarded, nearly all of which were sold at very satisfactory rates, the demand for export being as keen as ever. The primest crossbreds were more in demand than at last week’s sale, and IBs Id was obtained for some very nicely proportioned half bred Lincolns, the maiden ewes from that flock yielding 17g r sd. From 10s to 17s 3d were given for many pens of good sheep estimated to weigh from 04in to GBlb, net freezing weight, equal to per lb, the maiden ewes of the same quality giving an equally good return. In the lighter class prices remained much the same as last week’s, and the demand for good sorts of crossbred ewes was fully equal, ranging from 2d to 21 d per lb. TllQ entry of merino wethers was of a second rate character. Fat Cattle —The sale of fat cattle was on all fours with last week’s in point of numbers, quality, and price. Heifers sold up to £6 103 find steers to £B, giving a return of 19s to 20s Gd per 1001 b, and cows sold in proportion. Store Cattle, &e,—.Yearlings sold at from 30s to 375, two-and-a-half-ypar-old heifers and steers at £2 17s and £2 18s, and a few grown steers and heifers sold bettor than their fellows in the fat pens. There were some nice lines of dry cows which met with a willing market, and the dairy cows, though an "ordinary lot, sold well from £4 10s to £7 10s.. pjirg—There was a noticeable improvement 3 in the values given for light baconers, which fetched fully 3d per lb, while good sorts of farm-fed porkers were keenly sought after at up to 3gd per pound, DUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS. The following is the report for the | week ending Wednesday : Wheat —New wheat is offering plentifully, prime samples are selling at 4s to 4s 3d, Dunedin terms; and medium, 3s 8d to 3s lOd ; fowls’ wheat, good whole, 3s to 3s 3d ; broken and inferior, Is lOd to 2s 9d, Barley —Malting, 3s; milling, 2s 3d to 2s 8d; feed, Is lOd to 2s 3d. Oats—Milling, Is Gd to Is Gid ; bright short feed, Is Cd ; inferior and off color, l.s to Is 4d. Some new season’s feed lias been placed at Is GAd. , Bran 6os. Sharps, 80s. Roller flour, till j stone flour, £lO. »
Oatmeal—£B 15s to £lO. Potatoes—Plenty came forward, and prices receded to 45s per ton. Pigs—ln good demand, 3jd to 3Jd for prime quality; hams, 8d; bacon, s£d to 6d. Chaff—Prime well cut oaten sheaf, 60s to 62s 6d; medium quality, 52s 6d to 57s 6d. Straw —Oaten and wheaten, 30s, Clover and ryegrass hay, 60s. Butter Salt, Bid—at which price several hundred packages wore sold. Good keg butter wanted. Eggs—Scarcer and rising. Honey—4id for extracted. Cheese—Akaroa, large, to 4d; small, 41 d ; factory makes, large, 4jd to 4£d ; loaf sizes, sd. Grass Seeds—Ryegrass, fanners’ lots, 2s to 2s 6d; machine dressed, 3s to 3s Od ; cosksfoot, 3jd to 4d; Italian ryegrass, 3s 9d to 4s 6d. Sheepskins—At auction on Tuesday country dry crossbreds, inferior to medium, brought Is lOd to 3s 9d ; do do merino, Is 8d to 2s lOd ; full woolled crossbreds, 4s 8d to 5s lid ; do merino, 3s to 5s 3d ; dry pelts, 2d to Is 7d ; best green crossbred pelts, 2s 3d to 2s 8d ; selected, 2s 9d to 3s ; medium to good, Is lOd to 2s 2d; green merino pelts, Is 4d to Is 9d ; green lambskins —best,2ssdto2s lOd; medium to good, Is lOd to 2s 4d each. Hides—Quotations : For heavy, 2£d to 21d; extra do (651 b and over), 2jd to 3d ; average price for country hides, l)d to 2d; light, 1 :}d to lr]-d ; inferior and slippy, Id to Id per lb. Tallow— Prices remain the same as last week. A fair demand exists. Quotations: For best rendered mutton, 19s 6d to 20s ; medium to good, 16s to 18s 6d ; inferior to medium, 13s Od to 15s ; best caul fat, 12s 6d to 13s; inferior to medium and good, 9s to 12s per cwt.
DUNEDIN STOCK MARKETS. At the Burnside Market on Wednesday the following business was transacted;— Fat Cattle—3oß head yarded. About half were prime to good quality, though only a few were heavy weights. The supply was in excess of butchers’ requirements, and there was only a slack demand. Prices showed a considerable decline on last week’s values, more particularly on medium and inferior quality. Best bullocks sold at £7 to £8 7s Gd ; medium, £5 10s to £6 15s; light, £3 5s to £4 15s; cows and heifers, £3 to £7 7s 6d. Fat Sheep—269l penned, of which about 550 were merinos. Only a small proportion were wethers, but nearly all were good quality. The demand was slack throughout the sale, and prices showed a decline of Is to Is Gel on last week’s prices. Bert cross-bred workers sold at 16s to 16s; medium, 12s 9d to 14s ; best crossbred ewes, 13s 6d to 15s ; ordinary, 10s 9d to 12s 3d ; merino, Gs 3d to 12s 9d. Fat Lambs—22l penned, most of which were of medium quality, only one pen being prime. There was keen competition for every pen, and satisfactory prices were realised. Best sold at 10s to 12s ; medium, 7s 3d to 9s Gd. Pigs—lßß penned, for which there was only moderate competition, porkers and baconers fetching rather better prices than last week. Other sorts showed no improvement. Suckers sold at 5s Gd to 11s ; slips, 12s to 14s; stores, IGs to 17s; porkers, 22s to 25s ; baconers, 33s to 41s. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Sydney, April 5. There is only a limited demand for wheat and quotations are nominal. Flour, stonemade, £ll to £ll ss; roller-made, £lll2s 6d to £l2. Oats, feeding, medium, 2s 3d; 2irime, 2s Gd ; seed, 2s 7d to 2s Id. Maize, 2s7dto2sßd. Bran, lO.Ultolld; pollard, 9d to Potatoes, Waruambool, £3 ss; Circular Heads, £4 ss. Onions, £3 15s to £4. Butter, dairy-made, lOd ; factory-made, Is. Cheese, 4d to 5Jd. Bacon, 7d to 9d ; hams, New Zealand, 10s lid. Mex.boubne, April 5. Wheat 4s Id. Flour, stone-made, £9 5s to £9 10s ; roller-made £9 10s to £lO ss. Oats, prime Algerian 2s; short stoutish, 3s. Adelaide, April 5, Wheat 4s 2d. Oats, 3s 4d. ENGLISH AND FOREIGN MARKETS London, April 5. At the wool sales them is good competition, and prices remain very firm. Wool is very firm and bidding active. Greasy merino class has nearly recovered. April 6. The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 3.216.000 quarters, and for the Continent 1.272.000 quarters. April 7. Edward Elliot, a sharebroker, has been declared insolvent. His liabilities are set down at £2G3,000, and assets £254,000, leaving a deficiency of £9OOO. At the wool sales all kinds of crossbreds are very firm, and finer qualities are in better demdsid than was the case at the February series. Greasy merinos are £d lower than the rates ruling at the February sales. There is still excited competition for all classes. The directors of the Hansard Publishing Company have been committed for trial. The American visible wheat supply is estimated at 09,700,000 bushels. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, Christchurch, have received the following cable message dated London, 6th inst. : Wool —The sales progress firmly. Since close of last sales scoured has declined Id per lb; greasy merino, super, medium, and inferior, coarse crossbred, greasy and spoured, and greasy merino lambs super are par +o Ad per lb lower; fine and medium greasy and scoured crossbred and greasy merino lambs, medium and inferior, are Ad per Jb lower ; crossbred lambs unchanged. Competition by both Home foreign buyers is active. The total quantity catalogued to date is 81,000 bales, and the total quantity withdrawn to date 5000 lades.
