SPORTS AT GAPES'S VALLEY.
The annual school sports at Gapes s Valley took place in Mr Squire's paddock on Friday last. The sports consisted of horse racing—which commenced in the morning and terminated about tFQ o'clock—a move was then made to a paddock near the school, where the remainder of daylight was most enjoyably taken, advantage of by the numerous Residents of the Valley, with their chiliVen and guests. An ample supply of eatables were provided, and with some excellent tea, seemed to put everybody into| capital spirits—all hands seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. When darkness came on another move was made to the schoolroom, where dancing was the order of the night (or rather in the morning). The horse racing, which was got up by the young men of the valley on purpose to provide a fund for the children's sports later on, was a decided success. The finishes were excellent, aTI-d the races resulted in a fund of oyer five pounds towards the children's varioiis amusements. The committee worked the ahow all through, and everything went as smoothly as the proverbial marriage bell. The following is the prograiumo gone ./through:—■ •* Horse Hacks. Stewards Messrs Clephane, H. W. Lovegrove, and J. Love, jun. Judge— Mr Amyes. Starter—Mr (!. F. Lovegrove. Handicappers—Messrs Aniyos and Lovegrove. Lovegrove's Bay Colt, 4yrs, 12st, 1; Mr Squ:re's b h Monkey, list 81b, 2; Mr Clephane's Brown Filly, 4yrs, list 81b, 3. A splendid race. Won by half a length. The Brown Filly made the running, but had shot her bolt at the distance, when the other two took up the running and finished a 9 above. District Maiden Trot, one mile, list—Mr J. Love's The Pacer, 1; Mill. W. Lovegrove's Marmi, 2; Mr Clephane's Winnie, 3. A good race. After they all settled down to their work a good contest ensued, the favorite winning by a length, Winnie a good third. A Gallop, six furlongs, for all comers, list, owners up, entrance 2s 6d —Mr 11. W. Lovegrove's Bellbird, 1 ; Mr Clephane's Ada, 2; Mr Bray's Frolic, 3. A very good race, and considered very open, each competitor having a number of friends, and no doubt numerous halfcrowns changed hands among the crowd. Frolic, who jumped away with the lead, was evidently out-paced, as tho other two soon passed her, and an exciting race ensued, when Bellbird was cleverly landed a winner by a short head. Walk, Trot, and Gallop, once round at each pace, 12st, entraco ss, owners up— Mr Clephane's Ada, 1; Mr G. Lovegrove's Cigarette, 2; Mr A. Love's No-Name, 3 ; Mr Squire's Dolly, 4. A good race between the two first. Dolly made the pace in the walk, and got a long lead to start the trot, and it looked all over (except the shouting). Ada was the next to trot, closely followed by NcName, when it began to look doubtful for Dolly, who was passed just as the gallop commenced, by Ada, and Cigarette fairly handy, No-Name some distance away. The gap was gradually lessened by Cigarette, who finished a length behind Ada, No-Name and Dolly whipping in. Handicap Time Trot, twice round, list, entrance 2s 6d —Mr Clephane's Winnie, 50secs, 1; Mr H. W. Lovegrove's Marmi, 40secs, 2; Mr Love's The Pacer, scratch, 3. A good race for first and second places, the scratch horse evidently being over handicapped. Consolation Handicap, once round, entrance 2s 6d—Mr Clephane's Ada, list 81b, 1; Mr Squire's Monkey, list 81b, 2 ; Mr G. Lovegrove's Cigarette, 12st, 3; Mr Alex. Love's No-Name, list, 4. This was one of the best races of the day, the pace being merry and all in a cluster at the distance, when Ada and Monkey drew away, with Cigarette close up, all under the whip. The judge declared Ada the winner by the shortest of heads from Monkey, Cigarette on Monkey's quarters, which brought a most enjoyable meeting to a close, when all retired to the school paddock for lunch and tho boys' and girls' races and sports. children's races.
