London, March. 1

The Durham miners have joined the movement for the restriction of the output of coal. Many owners of works are giving their employees notice as they fear that the supply of coal will be short of requirements. The iron and steel trades are feeling acutely the unsettled state of the coal mining industry. Coal in London is likely to reach 42s per ton. March 2.

Many factories in the Midlands and North are closing through want of eoals. The situation at Sheffield is alarming, as cutlers, grinders, and forgers are all likely to be thrown out of employment. The miners of Northumberland, Lanarkshire, Ayrshire, and South Wales abstain from joining the strike. There is great excitement on the Coal Exchange in London. Prices have risen 5s in two days, and orders by the public cannot be filled. Many of the owners of large ironworks are giving notice to their employees, owing to a fear as to shortage of coal supply. Delegates both from the masters and men gave evidence before the Labor Commission in favor of the efficiency and utility of the Conciliation and Arbitration Boards in the North of England. At a conference between the mineowners and the men, the scheme evolved by Mr Pickard, member for Normanton, under which the men should work only five day* a week, was discussed, and the general opinion exthat it was unworkable.
