SUNDAY.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Can you tell me who changed th* Sabbath from the seventh to the first day of the week. Two of our Ministers have referred to the change, but have not given any authority for it. As the change is not intimated in the Bible, is it not done on, or by the authority of the Catholic Church? By answering the above you will greatly oblige.—l have, etc., Mystified. Temuka, Jan. 25,1892.
[The change was made in honor of the resurrection of our Saviour, and hence Sunday is frequently called our Lord’s Day. As there was no other Christian Church then, it must have been the Catholic Church. It was given legal effect to for the first time in the year 321 by the Emperor Constantine, but persons engaged in agriculture were allowed to work. In the year 469 the Emperor Leo I. thoroughly established as a day of rest.—Ed.]
