INFLUENZA.

London, Jan. 11. The Duke of Clarence and Avondale is confined to his bed at Sandringham, suffering from a severe attack of influenza and pneumonia. His medical attendants say there is no cause for alarm. English doctors were consulted in the Khedive’s case, but too late to save his life. Influenza is spreading in Holland, Sweden, Austria, and also in London. In Great Britain generally it is growing in severity. Most, of the London hospitals are full with influenza patients. Three hundred and twenty-nine cases of influenza are reported on the warships at Malta. Seventy deaths from influenza occurred in Paris on Sunday. Jan. 12, Admiral Mackenzie died of influenza. Cairo, Jan. 11. European doctors certify that the Khedive’s death resulted from influenza, accompanied by bloodpoisoning. The Egyptian doctors who were attending him injected morphia to allay pain, being ignorant of the fact that the patients lungs were affected. The Khedive’s widow and eldest daughter are both suffering from influenza. Rome, Jan, 11. On Friday eighty-four deaths from influenza were reported in Rome, ninety in Milan, and sixty-six in Turin. THE TRUTH ABOUT OUR NEW TAXATION. London, Jan. 11. Mr W. B. Perceval, the AgentGeneral for New Zealand, in a letter to the Times, ably expounds and defends the New Zealand taxation. He denies that the taxation of foreign capital has increased, except in instances where money has been invested in large arras of unimproved land, Mr Perceval traverses the statement in the article published by that paper on November 9th, and denies that it is the intention of the New Zealand Government to make loan companies or banks conductinglegitimate business pay more than formerly.
