AROWHENUA TOWN BOARD.

The regular monthly meeting of the above was held last night. Present — Mr J. Ash well (chairman), and Messrs E. Brown, A. Russell and E. Carr. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read From the Secretary Post and Telegraph Department, stating that it is not practicable to extend the letter carrier’s delivery at present, but anticipating that the receiving box which is now about to be opened at Mr Prattley’s store will be found to meet the requirements of the residents in the meantime.

A copy of a letter from the same to Mr A. E. G. Rhodes was also read. The letter stated that in reply to Mr Rhodes’s letter of December 3rd, recommending the establishment of a post office receiving box at Mr Prattley’s store, he had to inform him that one will be opened. It will be cleared once a day, in the forenoon.

From the Crown Lands Department, advising that the sum of £D 14s 7d had accrued from deferred payment and leasehold lands in Arowhenua, for the ; eriod from August Ist to 31at October, and asking the board to indicate in what

manner it was intended to expend the money. A circular was received from Mr Wilfred Badger, drawing attention to the intended publication of “ Badger’s Statutes,” and soliciting orders.

THE BRIDGE. Mr G. Lynch waited upon the board and explained the difficulty he had met with in connection with getting rid of the water at the site of the bridge. He found that his greatest trouble was with the

backwater. He stated there was an accumulation in the creek bed at the

cemetery, and explained his reasons. The subject was discussed at .great length. Mr Broivn pointed out that unless

some better outlet was provided it would be perfectly useless to continue to clean the creek. For his own part he should be in favor of not doing any thing more in

the matter of cleaning, unless the Government vested the creek reserves in the board, in which case there would be a special revenue accruing which would be

available for the purpose. Ultimately is was moved by Mr Russell —“ That the construction of the bridge be left in abeyance in the meantime ; that

the cemetery board be ashed to clean away the accumulation complained of by the contractor, and that as soon as the work is done the overseer call a special meeting.” Seconded by Mr Carr, and

carried, MARKET RESERVE, The chairman stated that the lease of the market reserve now occupied by Mi* Hayhurst would expire shortly. Several of the ratepayers had asked that the road forming the eastern boundary might be formed, and he thought the board ought to communicate with the Government

with the view of having the reserve vested in the board. The clerk was instructed to write to the Land Board and ask that the reserve be vested in the board at the expiry of the lease, * overseer’s report.

The overseer’s report was to the effect, that the contractor for road formation Mr J. Davis, had completed his work in a satisfactory manner, especially considering the dry weather. The stones on Gamack street had been broken according to instructions, and thistles grabbed as directed. The putting in Alexandra street had been pjadg in a satisfactory manner, the lowest tpndpr, that of Mr Davis, having been accepted by the chairman. The bridge contractor had started work, but was stopped by the difficulty in disposing of the water. The overseer recommended that the cemetery board be asked to have the creek through the cemetery cleaned, as the acpumalations helped to dam back water through the whole course of the creek, and rendered some of the footbridges quite useless, besides interfering with the erection of the bridge. He suggested in regard to the bridge that a slight diverson of the creek could be effected at a moderate cost, but awaited instructions from the board. A supply of dog collars had been procured from Mr B. H. Brewer at the usual charge. The roads were generally in good order. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £ls 5s 5d were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
