ST. SAVIOUR’S SUNDAY SCHOOL.
The annual distribution of prizes in connection with the above school took place on Sunday last in the new Sunday School. There was a large attendance of scholars, parents, and friends. After the usual introductory service the Rev. T. A. Hamilton, who presided, addressed a few words to those assembled, and apologised for the briefness of his remarks on the grounds that he had to attend to other clerical duties that day less pleasant than those which then engaged him. He read from “ The Quiver ” (one of the prizes to be allotted to the senior pupils) some few remarks on the subject of prize giving. These tended to show that better results were to be attained by the system of legitimate rewards than from punishment, and that when there was the prospect of an honorable reward attending consecutive effort the work was more genuine .and satisfactory both to scholars and teachers. He then distributed the prizes as follows : Standard VI. The prizes were allotted at the rate of three to each nine scholars, except in the case of the senior division, where every student received a book commemorative of a year’s study. The prizes having been distributed the rev. chairman retired to attend to other claims upon his time.
Mr R. Smith, of Winchester, then delivered a very telling address to the children, pointing out to them how exceptionally fortunate they were in having so commodious a hall in which to meet, and also in having so many advantages in connection with their teaching staff. He urged them all to avail themselves of the opportunities to the utmost.
Mr A. W. Gaze also gave a brief address, and moved a sincere vote of thanks to the superintendent, Mr R. Pinckney, for his sterling services, and also to the teachers. He pointed out to the scholars the self-denial exercised by the teachers, in continuing to give up their Sunday afternoons to their tuition, and trusted they would appreciate the same in a proper spirit.
Mr R. Pinckney briefly returned thanks on behalf of himself and the teachers, and the proceedings terminated with the customary closing service. The scholars who had been unsuccessful in receiving prizes, each received an appropriate card.
