THE WEATHER.

The heavy rain which has fallen in this district during the past few days has swollen the rivers considerably, and spoilt some good crops. The weather’ has also been intensely cold for this time of the year, and snow lias made its appearance on' some of the higher peaks in the vicinity of Mount Peel. Yesterday afternoon, however, cleared up after a shower of rain, and left a fine evening, which promised the return of good weather. There was a heavy thunderstorm at

Nelson on Monday night, and the residents of the Waimea describe it as the worst ever experienced in the district. The lightning at times was very vivid, and the rain descended in torrents. The Wai-iti, with its tributaries, rose rapidly and was soon in high flood. A great deal of damage was done to roads and standing crops. The approach to Wai-iti bridge, near Foxhill, was partly washed away, and traffic is stopped, and a number of small bridges and culverts were destroyed. The Midland Railway works at Belgrove suffered greatly by the floods. Crops of grain, and hop gardens have been much injured. Rain continued at Ashburton with but little cessation till 10 o’clock on Tuesday. Great damage was done to heavy crops, which are laid beyond recovery. Light crops are not much injured. The storms have been very irregular in their effect. In some places three inches of rain fell, and in others not half an inch.
