ENGLISH AND FOREIGN MARKETS, London, Jan. 1. Owing to the holidays there is no alteration in the wheat and flour market. Jan. 2. Canterbury mutton, 3§d ; Wellington, 3fd ; beef, forequarters, 2|d. Butter, dairy-made, shows a slight decline in demand. There is considerable enquiry for factory-made butter. Sugar, German beet, 14s 3d; Java cane, 16s 3d, market quiet. The factory-made butter, ex Doric from New Zealand, was nearly cleared at 124 s per cwt., and the dairy-made at 104 s. The mild weather has caused a drop of 4s per cwt. Farmers’ kegs are slow of .sale at 100 s to 112 s. £1,250,000 worth of New South Wales treasury bills have been placed on the London market. The year’s Stock Exchange payments at the clearing house declined by £350,000,000, and the total business of the clearing house declined by £953,000,000. Madrid, Jan. 2. The new tariff' which comes into operation in February, is of a protective character, and the most favored nation clause is abolished. Washington, Jan. 2.

The Bill, which Mr Stringer, Chairman of Committees of Ways and Means, will introduce into the House of Assembly, provides for the repeal of all duties on American imported wools excepting shoddy garments and waste, and abolishes specific duties on wool and woollen goods, and retains the ad valorem duties.
