LABOUR.
London, Jan. 1. In consequence of a quarrel between the coliers and mine-owners, on the basis of sliding-scale payments, 85,000 miners in South Wales were thrown out of work. Negotiations for a compromise were continued, and later intelligence reports that the difficulty has been arranged. Thirty thousand seamen have qualified to receive benefits under the Shipping Federation scheme. Mr Tom Mann, addressing the Engineers’ Association, urged the members to be above party politics, and secure legislation for the protection and benefit of trade and to strengthen their position in society.
