According to a discussion in the Timaru Borough Council last Monday evening on the question of carriers’ licences, we were misinformed as to fees charged. It does not appear that Temuka carriers have to pay more than Timaru carriers, in which ease, of course, no great injustice has been done. The following account of the discussion appeared in the local paper : —Mr Charteris of Temuka, wrote protesting against the charge of £2 5s for a carriage license; last year he only paid 255, and he considered the extra 20s unfair, while Timaru carriers and cabmen could go to Temuka and ply there for nothing. He also asked where was the distinction between Temuka men and the Timaru stab!ekeepers, who run on special days only. He ran a coach regularly thrice a week between Temuka and Timaru, and therefore deserved some consideration. The Town Clerk, as licensing officer, said the Timaru men paid the £2 ss. The mayor said the complaint arose because until this year, on the complaint of the Timaru men, the Temuka carriers had been charged only 235.
