AROWHENUA TOWN BOARD.

The regular monthly meeting was held last night. Present—Messrs J. Ashwell (chairman), E. Brown, A. Frew, E. Carr, and A. Russell. correspondence. Correspondence was read From the Temuka Road Board, covering a copy of a resolution passed by that body relative to the alteration of the Electoral district, and suggesting that the same should be amended so as to make the Rangitata river the northern boundary and that the old name of Gladstone or Geraldine should be retained in place of Pareora. From the Temuka Town Board, endorsing tha’ resolution, and suggesting that should an> part of same prove unworkable or obstructive, the Timaru Electoral District be extended southward fco render the districts more compact.—The board endorsed the resolutions of the Temuka Road and Town Boards, and the clerk was directed to write to the Representation Comssioners upon the subject. From the Crown Lands Department, stating that the Temuka Road Board had objected to the vesting of gravel from reserve 1069 in the Arowhenua Board, as this was the only pit available for supplying shingle to maintain 41 miles of road, and they had no reserve within 2i miles. The commissioner suggested that some joint arrangement might be come to.—The clerk to write and ask if the Land Board would have the reserve vested in the Temuka and Arowhenua Boards jointly. From the same acknowledging a letter relative to the fencing and cropping of Crown Lands, and stating that Mr Fussell would report upon the same. The whole question of dealing with lands along the j creek, had been referred to the head office, whose decision upon the matter the com- 1 missioner was awaiting.—The clerk reported | that Mr Fussell had come oub and that he ; would report to the Land Department who would doubtless move in the matter From the Surveyor-General, by direction of the Minister of Lands, acknowledging receipt of a letter on the subject of thirds in respect of lands sold for cash. The law only allowing payment of thirds to local bodies in respect of deferred i payment and perpetual lease lands, the resquest of the board for a share of those j sold for cash could not be complied with. | From the County Council, applying for payment of Board’s second contribution to hospital and charitable aid amount- ! ing to £3 6s lOd, and saking that the same might be remitted by December Ist. From Mr J. Washington, relative to the blocking up of the creek near his place.— The overseer said that the obstruction referred to was at Mrs Polaschek’s, and he was instructed to ask her to be good enough to have the same removed. POSTAL EXTENSION. The clerk read outward correspondence, and in connection with the postal extension the clerk stated that the post office authorities were willing to allow letters to be left at such place as the inhabitants might select, provided that a requisition was duly signed by settlers interested. —The clerk was instructed to write to the postmaster for a written statement of the position. MISCELLANEOUS. The clerk was instructed to draw the attention of the County Council to the fact that the nuisance at McLeod’s slaughter yards had not been abated, nor any further steps taken in the matter. The nuisance was intolerable and becoming more dangerous to public health as the summer advanced, and that frequent complaints had been made by adjoining residents, ALEXANDER STREET. Mr Brown drew attention to the gully in Alexander Street, and suggested that a great improvement could be effected at a small cost. No resolution was made, but it was agreed that members should take an opportunity and inspect the place. TENDERS. The following tenders were received : Formation Princes Street—T. Davis, 5s 9d per chain, crossings Os each, £lO 7s ; P. O’Mara, 5s 2d per chain, £8 18s (Id ; J. Davis, 4s 5d per chain, £8 3s 5d (accepted). Shingling Gamack Street—T. Davis, 9Jd per cubic yard ; P. O’Mara, 9d per cubic yard; J. Davis, B:]d per cubic yard (accepted), PROPOSED BRIDGE. The overseer submitted an estimate of a timber bridge, and some discussion ensued thereon. Mr Frew thought it would be much better if a concrete bridge could be put up, or one with concrete-face walls. On the motion of Mr Brown, seconded by Mr Frew, it was resolved —“ That the overseer invite alternate tenders for a timber bridge and one upon a modified design of timber and concrete ; the same to be considered at next meeting,” ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £ls 13s were passed for payment.
