FINANCIAL DIFFICULTY.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I do not know whether “ Subscriber,” and “ Guardian ” are satisfied with Mr Carston’s figures or not; but as a member of the late committee, and consequently having had something to do with the raising of the prize fund for 1890, they surprise me not a little to find that there was little or no balance left; to make out such a list Mr Carston could hardly have had in his possession the balance-sheet of the late committee submitted by them to the annual meeting of householders held last April; if he had, he would have seen that the balance from moneys expended in prizes was kept as a separate account, forming as it were a nucleus for other money to be added thereto, to go . towards prizes another year, and, if my memory serves me right, it was chiefly owing to the chairman of the late committee remarking to his committee that we ought not to place it with the general fund, as it would not be available again for prizes, as it would have to go in incidentals. I was prepared to see a ballauce sheet of the concert and prize fund of 1890, read something like the following Receipts.

1 hold that the account from Messrs Hutton, and Co., work done by. Moss, likewise stationary (3 months), stamps, post cards, etc., in all a total of £2 8s 6d should not have been paid out of the prize fund.

1 would like to ask Mr Oarston if railage 2s 6d is riot; rather plenty for a parcel of books. Likewise, if he has receipted accounts for what he gives the public.—l am, etc., v ; W. Harrison. Winchester, Nov. 16th, 1891.
