THE HOLIDAY.

The members and friends of the Geraldine Juvenile Temple, six trap loads in all, left Geraldine yesterday morning for a day’s outing at Orari Gorge, thinkiug that the misty weather which then prevailed would soon clear up. But they were doomed to disappointment, for it came on so heavily soon after they started that they had to return and make the best of it in Mr W. S. Maslin’s Auction Rooms, Mr Maslin having kindly lent his rooms for that purpose.

WOODBURY ATHLETIC SPORTS.

Judge —Mr D. Macdonald. Handicapper —Mr P. Macdonald. Secretary—Mr E. R. Flatman, junr. Stewards—Messrs A. Scott, J, Scott, W. Radford, F. Macdonald, B. T. Evans, C. Whalley, W. Shaw, and A. Fergusson. The fourth annual gathering of the above took place yesterday on the Woodbury Domain. The drizzling rain which set in in the forenoon looked much like putting a stop to all out-door sports, but by noon the clouds began to disperse and the sports were gone on with. A fair number of both ladies and gentlemen put in an appearance on the ground, although the long grass was wet, and made walking about the ground very disagreeable. Mr J. Riordan, of Geraldine, supplied refreshments on the ground, and appeared to be doing good business. The officials and Mr F. R Elatman, jun., the secretary, were very energetic in making all things pass off smoothly. Mr D. Macdonald as judge, and Mr F. Macdonald, as starter, gave every satisfaction, and there was an. absence of anythiny in the way of disputes. The first race was started punctially at 12.30. No time was taken in any of the races, no one on the ground having a stop watch. 100 Yards Flat Race—First prize, 30s; second, 15s : A. Scott, 6yds, 1; R. Orton, 3yds, 2; J. W. Radford, scr., 3. G. South, scr.; E. Beckley, scr.; W. 0, Lewis, Iyd; G. Turnbull, 2yds; J. Leversedge, 4yds; H. McLeod,- syds; J. Lorgelly, 6yds; W. Major, 7yds, also started. ’ All . the men got away in a bunch at the start, but Scott, with his 6yds start, was too strong, and held out well. Radford, scratch, made a plucky run for first place, and had there not been such a big field he would no doubt have succeeded in breaking through. He managed, however, to run the first and second men very closely. Radford was father heavily handicapped, and only a few yards start would have won him this race. Running High Jump—First prize, 20s; second, 10s : J. Heney, scr. (sjft), 1; J. Scott, 2in (4ft llin), 2; J. W- Radford, 2in (4ft lOin), 3. A. Scott also jumped, ibut fell out at 4ft 6in. Radford and tied, and’ had to jump again for second place. 220 Yards Hurdle Race—First prize, 30s ; second, 15s : J. Lorgelly, 13yds, 1; A. Scott, 13yds, 2; J. W. Radford, scr., 3. This had to be run over again, Lorgelly, who won it in the first race, having broken the rules by putting his hands on the hurdles. The race itself, too, was a very poor one frpm start to finish. Every hurdle was brought down by the leading man, and those who followed had a clear run in without jumping one. Leversedge and Beckley lodged protests, and the judge decided to run it again. In the second race Lorgelly and A. Scott got the lead, and maintained it to the finish, Lorgelly crossing the tape about Byds ahead of Scott. Radford, the scratch man, made a splendid run in for third. E. Beckley, 3yds, and J. Leversedge, 6yds, also started. Running Long Jump—First prize, 20s; second, 10s : J. Heney, scr. (18ft. When half way round the course Orton passed into first place, and looked like winning, but coming home was fagged out and Scott putting on a spurt passed him easily. Boys’ Race 120 yards—lst prize 10»» second prize ss: B. Cochrane, Ist > Rae 2nd; Ashby, 3rd. Vaulting with Pole—lst prize 20s, second prize 10s : F. McDonald, scr, (Bft 4iu), Ist; A. At the quarter mile Kennington gave up, and when the flag was passed Orton was first and J. Scott second. Orton kept his lead till half way round the second lap when he also gave up, and Scott, who was following close, took up the lead. Coming home King gradually ran him down and came in winner with a few yards to spare. 2 Mile Bicycle Race—lst prize, cu valued at 40s ; 2nd prize cup valued a 20s : J. Meredith, 240yds, 1; J. Pearce, 245yds, 2nd. J. Gillespie, scr.; J. McLean, 50yds ; and W. McDonald, 260yds, also competed. The scratch men had no show whatever. Gillespie unfortunately got a spill by McDonald, who ran his machine into him at the second or third round and was unable to make up his lost ground again. At the seventhround
