The first monthly meeting of members of the above society was held at the Crown Hotel, Temuka, on Tuesday evening. Present—Messrs J. Findlay, A. Beck, G. H. Mogridge, P. Coira, A. W. Gaze, and J. W. Velvin. Apologies for absence were verbally made on account of Messrs Nicholas, Hope, and Meredith-Kaye. In accordance with a suggestion made at the annual meeting it was decided to transact general business and so ease the labor of the committee as much as possible. Mr J. Findlay was accordingly voted to the chair. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence wat read— From Mr A. B. Hawkins, who expressed his regret that ho was unable to be present. He asked that the meetings whenever possible should be held about 4 o’clock in the afternoon. Many members would then be able to attend, and enjoy an fishing afterwards, He also suggested, in connection with the approaching competition, that it slxouldjbe held on waters granted solely for the use of members, and that lots be drawn lor places. By this means no member would be able to “ nurse ” a stream, and all would have an equal chance.
Mr A. M, Clark wrote thanking the members for again electing him as their president, and placing the waters under his control at the disposal of the members of the Angling Society for fishing. Messrs Aspiuall & Co. acknowledged the secretary’s letter of thanks for privileges granted last season. They regretted they could not continue to grant the same, as there was so much systematic poaching going on- They would, however, be prepared to favorably consider requests from members of the society for the privileg of au occasional day’s fishing, and would issue written nermits in such a case.
Mr Montgomery wrote with regard to a prize won by him at one of the combetitions. He had not yet received ’ the same. —The secretary stated that this was a special prize given by one of the members, and until lately it was understood that the same had been given privately by the donor to tho winner. Hence the delay. The committee and members were of opinion that the society were liable for all advertised prizes, and the secretary was instructed to forward Mr Montgomery a cheque for 20s. Mr Hawkins’s suggestions -met with favor, and it was resolved to hold the next meeting on a Thursday afternoon, and also to arrange places for competition day on tho linos suggested,
AUDITOR, ETC. It whs arranged that in future cheques be signed by Mr E. Cutten and the secretary, and that Mr R. Pinckney be asked to act as auditor. MONTHLY RECORDS. The following records of fish taken for the month were handed in. It was stated that others would follow : G. H. Mogridge—B9 fish, 47 Jib, all with the fly. A. E. Hawkins—ll 4 fish, 691 b, fly and bully. J. Findlay—47 fish, 27 14-16th lb, fly. J. W. Velvin—3s fish, 22Jib. SPECIAL PRIZE. Mr J. Findlay stated that Messrs Arthur Bi’iscoe & Co. had offered him the fly book produced to be awarded as a prize as the members should decide. They were heartily thanked for their gift. Discussion then ensued as to the best method of allotting it. Members genei’ally were of opinion that it would be • a good plan to award the prize foxseveral days’ fishing, and thus give all members .a reasonable chance. Ultimately it was moved by Mi' Gaze —“ That Messrs Arthur Briscoe & Co.’s prize of a fly book be awarded to the member making the best average take for four days’ fishing between November sth and the next meeting of members (probably December 3rd), the competition to be open to paid-up members of the society only, who must enter with, and notify to, the secretary the days upon which they intend to record their baskets for competition, and verify their takes either with the secretary, Mr J. W. Velvin, at Temuka, Mr Langdon at Winchester, or Mr A. E. Hawkins at Geraldine; should either of those gentlemen compete they to verify with some member of the Angling Society.” Mr Beck seconded the motion, which was carried. It was understood that at the time of entry there would be no occasion to mention all dates upon which a member intended to compete, but prior to entering upon a day’s fishing fox’ the px’ize the secretary must be notified. ANNUAL COMPETITION. The question of the annual competition was discussed, and it was resolved to hold it as usual on December 16th, the programme to be similar to that of last year. Several alterations were suggested, and it was agreed to confirm the programme in a fortnight. AMERICAN CHAR. With regard to the recommendation made at the last meeting, that the Acclimatisation Society be asked to procure some American chax - for the Ohapi cx-eeks, Mr Velvin stated that the secretary of the society had written to ascertain the price of same, and found that they would cost 20s a hundred for 12-months-oldfish. He was afraid the Acclimatisation Society would noi be prepared to give this price. This concluded the business, and members then enjoyed an hour’s conversation, when many moi’e startling records than have appeared were spoken of, moving accidents by flood related, and the conti ued pi’osperity of the society predicted.
