A correspondent favours the Mount Ida Chronicle with the following:- -“It has been always held by old miners who know the ground that good gold would one day or another be found on Station Hill, Deep Dell, but the swampy nature of the ground has prevented men with limited capital from bottoming. Mr Thomas Gately, an experienced and plucky prospector, succeeded in reaching the bottom after sinking 12ft in very swampy ground, and the prospects are excellent, there being 3ft of wash dirt giving 2dwt of gold to the dish. Mr Gately well deserves a good reward, which he has evidently gained. A number of claims have been pegged off, chiefly by rabbiters and shepherds. Hay Brothers, who are working next to Mr Gately, are down loft, but have not bottomed. Thomson and party are bringing in a tail race, which will take two or three weeks to finish, but they are going the right way to work the ground. This run extends for two or three miles, and will give employment to a great number of miners. Station Hill is 2500 ft above sea level, and adjoins the Two Brothers. It is thought good gold will yet be found in this hill also, as well as in the Three Sisters.” The Champion Cyclists of New Zealand will this season ride a “ Star ” Safety fitted with Pneumatic Tyres. Adams, Curties & Co., 70, Manchester Street, Christchurch. Cycles from £5; —5
