Drowned. —A sailor named John Taylor, twenty-five years of age, who arrived here by the Coptic on hex last voyage, was drowned whilst fishing in Lake Taumatu, North Canterbury. The boat in which he was, capsized, and he could not swim. His mate, who is a good swimmer, left him clinging to the boat, and went for a punt, but on his return Taylor was missing.— Frank Lindsay. 16 years, whose parents reside at Morningtou, was drowned while bathing in a lagoon at Green Island bush on Thursday. The Rev. Mark Guy Peaese— The Rev. Mark Guy Pearse, who visited New Zealand a few months ago, is said to be delighted with the colony, its soil, its glorious climate and scenery, and the absence of the poverty and hopeless misery which he left behind in the Old Country. His only regret was that thousands of the English small farmers, who have a hard fight of it to make both ends meet, could not be transplanted to New Zealand soil, and have a chance of a brighter future there than they can possibly have in the Old Land.

' The Secrets op the Heavens.—A determination of the movements of the star Arcturus has been made by Dr Elkin, the astronomer of the Yale College, and formerly of the Cape of Good Hope. From his long series of observation on its parallax, he has arrived at the conclusion that the star moves with the inconceivable speed of 381 miles in a second, which is 21 times faster than the motion of the earth in its orbit round the sun. The star is so far away from us that its light, which travels at the rate of 190,000 miles in a second, takes 181 years to reach the earth. The perseverance of such observers as Dr Elkin is thus gradually compelling the heavens to reveal their secrets, and to make a knowledge of them familiar to everyone.
