ENTERTAINMENT.
The entertainmeat given in the Volunteer Hall bn Thursday evening, in aid of the ffuiids of the Maori Church at the Arbwhenua kaik, was unique and fairly shccessfuL The attendance was hardly ? as If rge- 99 might have been anticipated, 1 hut Jke "auchence, were, orderly and of the performers being ... recalled;- ';Mr-’lhaia Rehu : acted as chair- " man, and announced in their order the various items upon the programme. The first'was a song of welcome by a number ~ of Maoris, under the leadership of Reuben - and H j Kokero. This made a hovel and effective : opening. Mr G. Barrett fol- • lowed with the song “He is Coming,” 7 which .he rendered with his customary ;' ; yigbri' r 'i : ’ Willie Gray was the first Mhon 1 Soloist, and sang “ Take Your Bounty Money Back again,” with much expression.—-He was encored,- Miss Rachel Teaka sang “ Wait till the Clouds Roll By,” and received very hearty applause. Mr E. Whitehead gave an effective: rendering of “The Man 0’ Waif”’ after which the “ Scotch Maori « ; Singers Miss ’ Fowler," was introduced. She- was clad in. tartan, and sang “ Wha wad’na ficht for Charlie ” with much spirit,, and was recalled. Mr Whelan saug-the - “Yellow Rose of Texas,” after which Miss Kahu sang “ Meet Me by , Moonlight Alone,” and in response to an encore repeated the last verse. , Mrs Rehu sang “ On the Banks of the . Clyde,” a pretty song, which was pleasingly rendered. After an interval of five minutes the curtain rose for the feature of the evening, “ The War Dance.” ‘-The majority of the performers were in full costume, with their faces painted in a marvellous way. The dance was given with much vigor, and the performers had . to repeat it. The next item on the Bk programme was a step dance by Mr Willie Gray, after which was a chorus sung ’■-.byr Mrs Rehu, Miss Teaka, jjMiss Fowler, and Messrs Rehu and • Fowler. Mr Rehu danced an Irish jig , wjth. immense vigor. He was attired in costume for the occasion. Another war dance! followed, and then Mr Kokoro and • Mr J; Mee, in native costume and armed t respectively with sword and mere, en-
gaged in a duel. It was a decidedly effective performance, and made a capital finish. Mr Heap played the accompaniments to the songs very carefully. A dance followed, at which there was a large attendance. Mr W. McCallum acted as M.C., and Messrs Goodwillie and Colville furnished lively music. It was kept up vigorously until the small hours. The promoters of the concert desire to thank Messrs Whitehead and Barrett for singing, Mr McCallum for his services as M.C., and Messrs Donn, Pinckney, and Gaze for general assistance.
