GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting the above board was held yesterday. Present—Messrs Flatman (chairman), Deßenzy, Brophy, Metcalf, and Kelland. TENDERS. Tenders were received for various works as follows : No. 341—Shingling Donkin's Eoad, Waihi Bush. One tender only, Daniel Gregan, £53 6s 8d (accepted). No. 343—Works Bhubarb Bush, (Lynn's Eoad) ; and Waitohi Hills, (Jessep'sEoad). Only one tender.—Fresh tenders to be called. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: From Mr J. H. McShane, about the necessity of lowering the water in the culvert on the Swamp Eoad. The water at present stood 2 feet 6 inches in the culvert, and was backing the water on his crop.—The Board considered that the road did not back the water on Mr McShane's land, and could not therefore accede to his request. From Mr Arthur Hope, Eokonui, stating that he was quite willing to do all the necessary work in connection with making a culvert, if the Board would supply the pipes—Pipes to be allowed,and Mr Allan MacDonald's consent obtained before the work is done.

From Messrs Peter McCaskill, J. H. M. Tagg, A. C.Kimbell, and Robt. Clephane, asking the Board to take into consideration the formation and metalling of the road known as Tagg's Road, Gapes's Valley, as soon as possible—The overseer to report at next meeting. From Mr A. 0. Kimbell, requesting the Board to reconsider their decision re the deviation of the road line leading to his property, and the properties of Messrs Foster, Gilbert, and others. He submitted the grade of the old road, 1 in 6, was too stsep to allow of the land to which it leads being worked; that the grade proposed of 1 in 10 will allow of a large area of bush being worked, which would give Employment to labour; that the cost of the deviation, estimated at £lO, was i trifling compared with the good it would effect.—Mr Kimhell waited on the board and stated that he thought those who wrote' against the proposed deviation had written under a misapprehension.—lt. was agreed by the board to allow Mr Kimbell to get contradictory evidence to that already before the board. From Mr Patrick McCarthy, Rangitata, asking the board to supply him with five chains of fencing stuff for the reserve adjoining his land—The Board will grant same if Mr McCarthy will rent the reserve at 20s per annum. From Mv 0. G. Tripp, Orari Gorge, stating that he had transferred a number of sections to his wife, and asked to have his name taken off the roll accordingly and his wife's substituted.—Granted.

From Mr J. T. Smith, Timaru, stating that he had made another plan and de - claration re Every's deviation road, and enclosed his account for same.—Account to be paid. From Mr John Thatcher, asking leave to plough along his frontage on the Woodbury and Rangit»* a roat is for the purpose of dqstr'uyuig g orge asKin.g to have b\- 6 name placed on the roll in Pluce of Mr J. 0. Condy's for section I 25775.—Request granted. No portion, of I formed road to be ploughed, From Mr John Fifield, Woodbury, stating that he. wiehed to lease the reserve opposite his house, and asked what terms. shillings per annum in advance for sheep only; lease to be cancelled should either cattle or horses be found on the reserve. - -

From the Clerk of the Geraldine County Council, enclosing cheque for £3l ss, being the council's share of subsidy on rates collectable by the road board. From Mr C. G. Tripp, Orari Gorge, stating that tracks up the Waihi Gorge were in many places in bad order, and required widening in some places.—The overseer to report, and call tenders if necessary. From Mr E. Prattley, Temuka, saying that he was sorry he had not been able to clear gorse according to the board's instructions, but would do so as soon as possible.—The overseer to see that the work is done at once. From Mr Daniel Gregan, Pleasant Valley, pointing out that he was obliged to make a bridge over the drain on the main road, close to Mr Walker's, costing him 18s. He wished to be refunded for same.—The board will allow 10s or let Mr Gregan take it away. From Mr John W. Jones, Kakahu Bush, asking to have a foot tracfrformed from his section to Mr Scobie'a'; section.— Granted. / .*-.; :'.■-■■■■'■ bird nuisance. ■ -'■•'■;• From Mr C. M. Brooke,. re poisoned wheat. Hitherto strychnine had „ always been dissolved in vinegar, acetic acid, or spirit of salt, All these had a distinct smell, which the birds had become accustomed to. His preparation now was entirely free from smeU,- and as the birds took bluestoned wheat readily he was alsobluestoneing it.—-Supply obtained. It was agreed io purchase birds heads and eggs on similar lines, and at the same price, as last year. APPOINTMENT OF VALUATORS. A circular was, read from Chas. M. CrOmbie, Commissioner of Taxes, stating that as applications had been invited from valuers willing to undertake the duties of assessor for;the approaching assessment ho would be obliged if facilities were afforded to intending applicants for inspecting the v rolls now in force, and also for examiningI any maps in order to make an estimate of [•the extent of work involved. ['•■•• ACCOUNTS. The pay sheet amounted to £134 lg 5dL overseer's report. The overseer reported as follows ; . "Ihave the honor to report for the information of the board as under : " Contracts : Very' good progress has ueen made with the works in hand* No. 339, Shaw's road and Swump road, and No. 340, Brown's road, Orari V.S., have been completed during the month. The new road leading to Jessep's has been pegged out, and tenders called for the work; the bridge timber is on theground. Tenders have been invited for an extension of the road leading to Lynn's: camp, in the same neighborhood.— Mr Shaw's application: Hae-hae-te-moanai Gorge road. On going through the goigp with Mr Shaw, jun., I find he wants a> road made so as to avoid crossing thee river, which the present track does hi at distance of 2$ miles no less than twelve times. To do this would entail a heavyexpenditure, as in several places the road would have to be benched out of the solid rock, which is of a very hard nature and costly to work. The road has not yet been laid off by the Government Surveyor.—Thirds :' I have prepared estimates for various roads, and marked. tha plans showing proposals for expending: the accrued thirds from' perpetual lease' aud other lands, is requested by the commissioner.—Poisoned wheat: A good! demand has existed during the past month for this article. I have ordered a fresh supply.—General rate: I have collected!, to date £671 7s lOd on this account. The> rates are now conymg in very slowly.— Material: A fresh supply of planking is required, as ouc present stock in nearly exhausted., " Wm. Shiers, " Overseer." The report was read, and it was agreed that the overseer explain to the Chief Commissioner of Lands re Mr Shaw's application; that notice be given through the paper re rates not paid up"; that the-' overseer procure material required. The board then rose.
