Mr Coghlan?s statistics for Australia up to the end of 1889 have been issued. They show that at the present rate of increase the-population will-be doubled wjithin! theinext 21- years. At present it is equal to six persons for every five square miles. Victoria is most densely populated, the rates being 13 persons to the spuare mile. In New South Wales it is only .4. - Ther&te of increase during the decade reached its maximum in 1883, since when it has been gradually falling. The births in 1889 numbered 126,900 and deaths 50,400. New South Wales had the largest number of birtha, and Victoria the largest number of deaths. New Zealand possessed the lowest death rate. Children's deaths are usually regarded as an indication of the healthiness in the cities, and going by that standard Wellington was the healthiest of the capitals, Adelaide and Sydney next, Hobart and Melbourne last. The total revenue of the colonies was £29,2i6,000. The chief items were railways, tramways, £9,302,000, customs £8,434,000, lands £4,164,000. The resources of the colonies have incraesed in a fair proportion to the population. The expenditure amounted to £30,720,000. New Zealand pays a higher rate of interest on her debt than the other colonies. Taking Australasia as a whole it.pajrs £ll 9s lOd per head on this score, on an expenditure, up to end of the decade amounting t0.£185,672,000. New South Wales and New Zealand were the largest borrowers. The total, amount of public indebtedness had nearly doubled: since 1881. Imports were valued at £67,930,000, exports at £64,664,000. The export of wool amounted to £20,380,000. More than half the area, of land |is still unalienated or leased. 7,066,000 acres are under, crop exclusive of land sown in grass. New Zealand occupies the third position and New South Wales is fourth in this respect. Live stock totalled 114,000,000 ; - sheep, 10,676,000, cattle 1,697,000. Mineral products are valued at £12,283,000.
