FOOTBALL DANCE.
The annual dance given by thp members of the Waihi Football Club took place in the Public Hall, Winchester, on Friday evening, 18th inst. The weather was anything but fine, a thick light rain falling during the evening. Despite this it was, as usual, a success, over 30 couples being present. The hall was nicely decorated with flowers, evergreens, &c., while in two prominent parts of the room were placed the club’s banners. Dancing commenced at 9 o’clock, and was kept up with spirit till about 4 o’clock in the mprning. Messrs C. Goodwillie and F. Colville supplied the music. These gentlemen have made a name for themselves in this 'district as musicians, and on this occasion, as on previous ones, the music was excellent. Mr T. Hart made a most efficient M.O. Refreshments of all lands were provided for the inner man and done full justice to. These were prepared by the ladies of the district voluntarily, the. ingredients being purchased by the dub.. After the dance it was found that.a,large part of the refreshments remaieed. Part of this was given to the ladies who had taken an active part in the matter, and part was given to Mr Nisbett, who at present is unable to work for himself and family owing to a painful illness. During the evening Mr H. F. Harte (a retired member of the club) gave a capital speech on the club’s behalf, thanking the ladies for their assistance, and complimenting the club on their success during the past season. He also, on behalf of the club, moved a vote of thanks to the president and vice-presidents, an d lastly tendered the club’s thanks to Mr H. E. Smith, who during the past season had unselfishly given liia time by acting as their umpire at the several cup matches. He was also the club’s delegate at theßugby Union meetings. Mr Smith had performed the duties of both these offices in a most creditable manner. Mr Harte then sat down amid applause. The dance was much enjoyed by all present. The club have indeed had a most successful season. Starting with not more than twenty members, numbers were added to their ranks, till at the end of the season the club could boast of fully b 0 members; over 40 of whom live in the "Winchester district. It was thought by many at the commencement of the season that no club would be formed owing to there being so few members to take part in the game. Delegates from two , neigkboaxfy clubs attended the first meeting to secure members for"their respective teams s]?ut a ievr of the Waihi members
stood firm and resolved to form a club—if it were only a second fifteen—with the result that they have come off victorious in every cup match. During the season the club have scored 40 points against 8 points. On May 24th the team played Sydenham (Christchurch), and won by 6 points to nil, proving themselves better than their opponents at every point of the game. In most of their cup matches they have had matters nearly all their own way. Should they keep together till next season they should again take a prominent place, being a fast and fairly heavy team. The second fifteen were also fairly successful, being placed second for the second fifteen flag presented by the Rugby Union. Two medals presented for best back and forward players were won by A. Shallard back, and F. Shallard (captain) forward. We wish the club every future success.
