SENTENCE OF A FORGER.
Sydney, Aug. 12. At the Central Criminal Court on Monday Robert Charles Cole, who has been found "Guilty" on various charges of forgery and utterance, whereby heavy losses were inflicted on the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney, was brought up for sentence. i The prisoner handed in a written ' statement to the effect that he had been led astray by bad companions. He felt his position keenly, and trusted that their Honours would deal leniently with him. Mr Justice Innes, in passing sentence, said the prisoner had boldly carried on a long continued and systematic course of cleverly contrived forgeries. Though only twenty-four years of age, there was no question that he was accomplished in that kind of crime, as t'ie depositions showed that there had been upwards of 400 separate forgeries. The prisoner's youth was the only circumstance they could pay serious attention to as mitigating the sentence. The sentence would be seven year's penal servitude for each of the three offences of which he had been found guilty, the sentences to be concurrent. The usual remission of sentence would not be allowed, but the full term would have to be served. Mr Justice Stephen concurred in the sentence, and the prisoner was removed.
