SUPREME COURT.

Auckland, Aug. 31. The Supreme Court criminal sitting opened to-day, with a heavy calendar of 42 charges, involving thirty persons, mostly larcenies and forging and uttering. There are three of indecent assault and three of libel. Sydney Hansen, rearrested for not paying £3O costs when let out on probation four years ago, was ordered to pay the balance and be placed on probation for 12 months. John Wilson, for stealing altar cloths from St. Patrick’s Cathedral, got three years. Thos. Meikle Ford got two years on two charges of forging and uttering, conM current. George Walkingham got three sears for forging and uttering. ‘ . Wellington, Aug. 31. The criminal sitting of the Supreme Court opened this morning before the Chief Justice. The calendar contains the names of sixteen persons charged with ■'wtfffences of an ordinary character, most 'of them being false pretences and forgery. Chief Justice Prendergast, in addressing the Grand Jury, remarked that criminals now seemed to direct their attention more to acts of fraud than to acts of violence. Charles L, Fleming pleaded guilty to forging a cheque for £7 10s at Palmerston North, and was sentenced to • eighteen months. Charles Lindegreen pleaded guilty to a charge of forgery, and was remanded till Friday for a report by the probation officer. Lucy Walden, charged With larceny, did not answer to her bail when called. Dunedin, Aug. 31. In the Supreme Court, on the application of Sir R. Stout a special jury was ordered in the trial of Metcalf, the « Picturesque Atlas ” man charged with perjury. George Widdicombe was found i guilty of larceny, and sentence was defferred. No Bill was found in the case of Rose Seaker,' charged with larceny.
