COMMERCIAL.
CHRISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE. The following is the Corn Exchange report (per N. P. Meyers, Secretary), for the week ending August 28th : The smart advances in the European wheat market has had the effect of hardening our local markets, but values have not materially advanced. Prices appear to Re lasting, and we shall be disappointed if high values do not rule for the coming harvest. Oats have a fair enquiry for local purposes, but, all shipping orders go to our southern neighbors. Barley is quiet at our quotations; there has been a clearance of a considerable quantity of feed sorts. The demand for ryegrass and cocksfoot is setting in, and prices are maintained. Potatoes fire nominal. Dairy produce has a fair demand, considering the lateness of the season. Our quotations are as follow: Wheat—Prime milling tuscan, 4s 4d; pearl, 4s 3d : hunters, 4s Id to 4a 2d; broken, 3s 3d to 3s 6d. Oats—Milling, Is lOd; short feed, Is 9d; long and inferior, Is 6d to Is Bd. Barley—Prime malting, 3s; medium, 2s 6d; feed, Is lOd to 2s.
Beans—2s 9d to 3s. Peas—Blue peas, 2s 9d to 3s; feed, 2s 8d to 2sTod.
Ryegrass —Machine dressed, 6s to 5s 3d ; farmers’ lines, 4s to 4s 3d. Cocksfoot, 5d to s£d for best heavy samples; 4£d to 4f d for lighter seed. Dairy Produce —Butter, factory make, Is. Farmers’ keg, 9d. Cheese, small loaf shape, 4id; large and medium, 3fd to. 4Jd.
The above quotations are those paid to farmers, f.o.b. Lyttelton, sacks extra. CHRISTCHURCH STOCK MARKETS. At the Addington yards on Wednesday 10,512 sheep, 409 cattle, and 260 pigs formed the entry for the day’s auction. Fat Sheep—Larger entry than on the previous week, but quality was not at all well represented. A magnificent line of crossbred wethers brought 235. The
balance of the line bold at 23s 6d and 21s, and one fat ewe for same owner at 28s. A line of hoggets realised 17s 8d each. A line of grand merino wethers sold at 17s lOd. The balance of the line sold at 16s 9d; one small pen at 15s 9d. Other sorts brought from Gs 3d upwards. Store Sheep—Best hoggets sold at from 11s to 14s—the latter price was obtained for a pen of exceptionally good three-quarter-bred hoggets; inferior lines sold at 8s to 10s 6d.
Fat Lambs—About 20 came forward, and sold at 10s, 14s, to 16s 6d each. Fat Cattle—Full entry, about 200 head being y orded. This coming on last week’s bare market buyers were eager for all good lines; biddings wefe spirited and good prices were obtained throughout. Beef may be quoted at fully 20s to 23s per 100 ft). Best bullocks sold at £9, £lO, to £lO 17s 6d. Heifers, £6 to £B. Cows to £7 10s each.
Veal—Small entry, best calves sold at 20s to 30s, others at Bs, 15s, to 17s each. Store Cattle—Biddings. were decidedly brisk, and a shade better values were obtained ; three-year-old steers sold at £3 10s, £4, to £4 10s each; two year-old steers, 40s to 52s 6d; pens store cows at 20s, 30s, to 52s 6d each, yearlings, 15s to 24s each; bulls, 15s to £5 according fo condition.
Dairy Cattle—Small entry, very inferior class of cows yarded, mostly old and poor-conditioned sorts; biddings were slack, and low prices had to he accepted to effect sales, £3, £4, to £5 10s would be about the ruling pi-ices. Pigs Larger entry than on the previous week, and slightly better prices were obtained. Bacon pigs sold at 25s to 355; choppers, 40s, to £2 10s; porkers, 14s, 17s, to 23s each; small stores, 6s to 10s ; larger sorts, 10s to 15s.
DUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS. The following is the report for the week ending Wednesday Wheat—Market firm, and has plenty inquiry, prices ’are moving upward. Prime tuscans and velvets; 4s 7d to 4s 9d; other good milling sorts,'4s 4d to 4s 6d; fowls’ wheat, good whole, 3s 8d to 4s. Onions—£6.
Barley—Malting, 3s to 3s 3d; milling, 2s.4dto 2s 6d; feed, 2s to 2s 3d. Pearl barley, £l3. Oats—Best milling and seed, Is 6d to Is 7d; bright plump feed range from Is s£d to Is 6|d; other sorts, Is 3d to 4d—all sacks extra, off trucks, and ex store.
Flour—Roller, £l2; st one, £ll 5s Oatmeal, £8 10s to £lO 10s. Bran—£3 10s. Sharps, £4 10s. Potatoes—Glutted; kidneys for seed, £2 5s to £2los.
Pigs—l4oft) to 160ffi), well fed and well cured, 3|d; large sizes not saleable; hams, 7d to 8d; bacon, 5d to 6d.
Chaff—£2 5s to £2 10s. Turnips—Scarce, 255. Carrots, 30s to 355.
Straw—(Oaten and wheaten), 30s to 355. Hay, (oaten), £3. Clover and ryegrass hay, £3 5s to £3 10s. Butter—Prime salt, 8d to 9d, scarce and in good demand; Taranaki fresh factory butter, Is 3d per ft). Eggs—Fairly supplied. Honey, 5d per ft). Cheese —Factory, 5d to sjd; dairy, 4d to 4£d.
Grass Seed—Ryegrass, 3s 6d to Ba 9d; cocksfoot, 4fd to 6d per ft). Cocksfoot is now in active demand.
Hides—Market unchanged, for 60ft) hides, 2Jd to 3d; 65!b and upwards, Jd to Id more; medium weights, 2d to 2jd; light do, Ijd to l|d; inferior, Id to l£d per ft).
Tallow—The market has not been so well, supplied during the past week or two, but as manufacturers are not dependent upon supplies from the country, the scarcity has had no effect on values. Best rendered mutton, 18s 6d to 20s; medium to good, 15s 6d to 17s 6d; inferior to mixed, 12s to 15s; and for rough fat, best clean caul, 13s to 13s 6d; inferior to medium and good, 9s to 12s 6d per cwt. Sheepskins—On Tuesday country dry crossbreds, inferior to medium, brought 2s 2d to 4s 2d; do do merino, Is 9d to 3s lOd; full-woolled crossbreds, 4s 9d to 7s 6d; do do merino, 4s Id'to 6s 3d; dry pelts, 3d to Is lid; butchers’ green haKbreds and fine crossbreds—best 6s 8d to 6s; good to medium, 5s lOd to 5s 4d: coarse woolled and small, 5s 2d to 4s 4d; green merino, 4s 9d to 2s Bd.
