FOOTBALL.

WAIHI.FIRST V. TEMUKA FIRST. The second and final Cup match between the above clubs took place on Saturday, 22nd inst., at Winchester. The late rains left the ground in rather a soft state, but not enough to prevent fast play. A cold wind was blowing, which made it rather unpleasant for onlookers. The game was witnessed by a fair number of spectators, among whom were a few ladies. As a rule the onlookers at matches played in Winchester are very orderly, but on this occasion exception must be taken, as a number of young men persisted in parading on the inside of the lines during play. This shows very bad principle, and it is to be hoped it will not occur again. Besides this there was much unnecessary shouting, which is in place when some good play is shown, but is foolish when carried on from start to finish, at times without cause. When the men lined out to commence it was seen they were fairly matched in weight, Waihi being slightly the heavier. Play commenced by Temuka kicking off, and for a time play centred in Waihi's quarters, who were at last forced down. After lack out A. | Shallard made a long punt, and following up well again secured the leather, taking it right into Temuka's twenty-fives before being grassed. Offside play by Temuka obtained for Waihi a free kick, which A. Shallard, from a difficult angle, almost converted into a goal. After the kick out Waihi were awarded another i free kick, which was well followed up by the forwards, and play was shifted to Temuka quarters; but Gillespie, by a good punt, pressed Waihi on the defensive. A. Stewart, by a strong ran, in which he laid two or three of his opponents by the wayside, took the leather into neutral territory. Temuka forwards, by a continued rush, again placed Waihi on the defensive. From here the Waihi forwards dribbled to the Temuka line, where A. Stewart's speed onabled him to secure 'a try, A. Shallard converted it from a difficult angle. After the kick off play was confined to half way till A.'Opie obtained the' ball, and by a fast run touched down behind the posts. This player caused gmtt aiuuaeiaent by jmhp-

ing clean over Storey's back, who attempted to grass him. A. Shallard was again successful in the attempt at goal. After the kick off play hovered about half way till A. Stewart, by a strong run, transferred it to Temulca quarters, and soon after by fast following up obtained a try. A. Shallard failed to add the major point, and half time waß called leaving Waihi 7 points to the good. On resuming play, Velvin, by a strong run, took the leather to Waihi territory, and being collared, passed to McKinley, who dribbled over the line and obtained the first try for Tentuka, which Goldstone, by a pretty kick, converted into a goal. On the ball being kicked out Temuka were quickly penned in, and soon after forced down. Play now became very fast, the ball travelling quickly from one end of the ground to the other till A. Shallard securing it potted a very neat goal. Play from now till time was called was loof6 and exciting. Waihi thus won the match by 10 points to 3. In due fairness to the visitors it must be said their play in most respects was equal to that shown by their i opponents. The game on the whole was very even, neither side claiming much advantage, although the result would seem to point to the contrary. Of the visiting backs Gilleßpie, Gaffaney, and Storey were the best, and Brosnahan, Carr, and Goldstone were the pick of the forwards. For Waihi, A. Shallard > Moore, and McLeod played best at back, A. Shallard's kicking being especially good, while Hart (2), and F. Shallard worked hard in the scrums, and Stewart (2) showed to advantage in the open. The game was played in a quiet and friendly spirit. Messrs H. E. Smith and B. Smith umpired for Waihi and Temuka respectively, while the Rev. W. 0. Wood acted as referee, all three by their decisions giving general satisfaction to both teams.

The following is the team picked to represent Waihi first fifteen againßt Timara on Thursday next on the Winchester ground : —W. Moore, Morrison, Opie (2), McLeod, Shallard (2), Stewart (2), Harts (2), Brinkman, Wakely, Turnbull, and Lewis. The following will represent the second fifteen in their match with the Colonials in Timaru:—Moore, Bryan, Coles, Souths (2), Blissett, Opie, Hendersons (3), Burborough, Austin, Leversidge, Fiefield, and Wakely. Mundell's drag will leave Winchester at 1 p.m.

The following have been picked to represent Temuka Second in their Flag match with the Union Second (Timaru) on Thursday, Aug. 27th: —Full back, W. Russell; three-quarters, McAuliffe, Storey, and Austin; halves, Findlay and Rodgers; forwards, Robinson (captain), Marshall (2), Henry, Polaschek, Smith, Thomson, Ross, McKinlay; emergencies, Holden, Lee, and Carr. The game will take place in the Victoria Park, Temuka, commencing at 3.30 sharp. WELLINGTON V. CANTERBURY. Christchurch, August 22. The Interprovincial match between the Provinces of Wellington and Canterbury was played on Saturday at Lancaster Park before 3000 specators, The play was altogether in favour of Canterbury, who won easily by 4 goals and 4 tries to 1 try, or 16 points to 1 point. v The home team were too good at every point of the game, and no very much finer display of allround football has yet been given by any team at Lancaster Park.
