TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Tern uk a Road Board was held on Tuesday last. Present—Mesars J, Talbot (Chairman), C, Bisset, J. Fraser, W. Snell, and J. Woodhead. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read s. From the manager of .the Colonial f Investment Company, objecting to the proposed alterations and deviations of mads leading to Rangitata mouth.— It was decided that Messrs Rolleston r and Cadwallader be informed that the board cannot proceed further in regard to these alterations until the consent of the Company is obtained. From the South Canterbury Board of Education, forwarding a resolution passed by them to the effect that this Board be asked to contribute an equal sum with the Board of Governors of t)ie Timaru High School towards defraying the expense of deepening the drain which carries off the surplus waters from the low-lying gronnd in the vicinity of Education Reserve 1211.—The overseer to report at next meeting.
From the Geraldine Road Board, covering a rough draft of a proposal made by that body and the Mount Peel Road Board to alter the present constitution of County Councils. —-Resolved: “ That this board, while admitting that the proposal would effect a small saving in the matter of elections, on all other grounds consider the alteration would be a retrograde step by taking away the direct representation. Nor can the board see that any benefit would accrue in the way indicated as to the mode of carrying out county works, which are in the case of this council limited the large bridges. s' From Mr John Airey and the Executors of the late Angus Macdonald, consenting to proposed alterations on road to Rangitata mouth.. From Mr John Murray, Orari Station, asking that the North Orari Road be shingled and part of Belfield Road formed.—Overseer to report.
From Mr John Donnithorne consenting to. pay half cost of cleaning drain on land occupied by him.—Tenders had been called for the work.
From the clerk Geraldine County Council, forwarding a copy of the electoral roll for the Temuka Riding. From the Secretary Hospitial and Charitable Aid Board, asking for payment of half-yearly contribution. From the Property Tax Department, covering form to be filled up to entitle the board to receive balance of subsidy.—Attended to. From the South Orari River Board, directing the Temuka Road Board to make and levy a rate of one farthing in the pound on property in the South Orari River District.
From Mr D. Young, asking that certain sections might be transferred upon the roll to Mr David James Young. V From Mr R. Matthews, asking the name of Mr W. Smith may be inserted on the roll in place of his in respect of Rural Section 7959. From Mr P, Coira, asking that they' name of Mrs Elizabeth Powell be substituted for his in respect of eight lots in Andrewville. HATES. It was resolved—“ That a general rate of 9-16ths of a penny in the £ be on the rateable value of the whole rateable property in the Temuka Road District be now struck ; such rate to be for the year ending the 31st March, 1892, and to become payable at the' Temuka Road Board Office on and after the loth July, 1892.” The request of the Orari River Board to strike a rate was complied with. INTERVIEW. Mr Lawson waited upon the board , and asked that the house at the pound! be painted, and other repairs exected. —The members decided to inspect the pound. The question was left over until next meeting. COMI’f.AIXK. A complaint having been made as to Mr W. Hawke having a camp upon the road, the clerk was directed to notify him that the same must be. removed at once.
OVEIISEEIf’s I’EIIOIiT. The overseer’s reportwas read and dealt with as follows : “ To the Chairman.
“ Sib, —I have the honor to report for the past month as follows:—Tenders have been invited for the work authorised to be done near Mr Mason’s store at Orari, and also for cleaning a drain on. the road running from Mr Donnithorne’s farm to Mr A. L. Barker’s. The 09011piers of adjoining land have agreed to pay one half the cost of this work. Mr Fifield has completed the work agreed on in regard to Contract No. 06, and the same has been bassed for payment.—l have communicated with owners of land who are interested in the proposed altera-, tions and deviations of roads leading to Rangitata mouth, and their replies are before you. The cost of the alterations I estimate at £—.—l have obtained a supply of poisoned wheat from Mr E. 0. Dann, but there has so far been little demand for it.—l would recomxhend that two or three long iron rails be driven at the end of Hawkes’s Road, Orari j River.—The rate-roll has been open inspection during the last fourteen days, and is now awaiting your signature.— I have, etc., “F, Archer, “Overseer to Board” It was resolved that some iron rails be driven in at the end of Hawke’s road, Orari. POISONED WHEAT. Attention was drawn to the fact that farmers were only sparingly using
poisoned wheat. It was thought, though the birds did not seem so numerous, that it would be well to impress upon the farmers the advisability of still continuing to use every effort to exterminate them.
TENDERS. The following tenders were considered Contract No. 38 —Cleaning drain : R. Roberts, Is per chain; W. Cox, Is 6d per chain ; P. Buckley, informal; Curry and Hobbs, Is per chain (accepted.) Contract No. 39—Crossing at Orari: Jonas Fifield, £4 (.accepted.) ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £223 11s 8d were passed for payment and the meeting terminated.
