“ Are you a Paris-ite ?” asked the cholera baccillus. “ No, ” replied the consumption bacillus; I’m a Germ-un.” “I wonder what makes my eyes so week,” said Robertson to Smith. “ Why, they are in a weak place,” said the other. Mr Bullion (to his collector): “How were you received at Neverpay ?” Sticker: “ Very cordially ; I was asked to call again.” The custom of throwing an old slipper after a newly-wedded pair is of ancient descent, and is believed to have had its origin in the idea that marriage is a slippery kind of business. Lord Aberdeen, with a golden key, formally closed the Glasgow East-end Exhibition. It has been visited by 750,000 persons, and yielded a surplus. An Exchange Company’s telegram from St. Petersburg says: The “ black death ” has reached Tobolsk, in Siberia. The whole of Asiatic Russia from Samakand, in the South to the mouth of the river Obi, in the extreme north, is suffering under the same awful scourge, especially in the town of Obdorsk, situated on the bay of the same name that borders the Arctic Sea, the “ death” is making ravages among the inhabitants, chiefly Samoyedes. Thousands are dying, and as there is only one doctor in the whole district there is no hope of checking the fast-spreading disease. In 1889 the state of Nebrasca raised such an immense crop of grain that the market was completely glutted. Indian corn was sold at 5d a bushel, and during the winter it was found cheaper to burn grain than coal as fuel. Farmers had to part with everything, in order to obtain money for immediate use. They are now in greater distress than a year ago, because the grain crop of 1890 was almost a failure, and in order to keep their pigs and cattle alive many farmers had to purchase corn to feed them. Those who were able to save from last year’s abundance have weathered the stress easily enough, but the majority of the farmers in the western counties have had to appeal to their more fortunate neighbors to assist them with food, fuel, and clothing. True Economy. —To purchase Countess Tea for two shillings. Free from any excess of astringency.—[Advt.]
