THE SHINGLE QUESTION.

After the reading of the report of Messrs Wilson and Napier Bell last Wednesday at the meeting of the Timaru Harbor Board, discussion on the subject was continued. It was agreed on all sides that the report simply endorsed the previous report of Messrs Goodall and O’Connor, and Mr Gibson moved, “That the -Standing Oommitteie be authorised to arrange for the necessary plant in order to test the, capability, of the Priestman dredge for removing the shingle, as suggested by the two commissioners, and also to instruct the board’s engineer to visit, inspect, and report upon the Wellman dredge now at work at Waikawa, and any others that they may deem necessary, and, collect all information and data, with a view to eventually purchasing a pump dredge; the committee to report progress at all ordinary meetings of the board. Captain Woollcombe seconded the motion, and both urged there was nothing for it now but adopt the proposals of the engiuers. Mr George Stumbles opposed the motion, and argued that it would be better to extend the straight out 300 or 400 yards. It was alleged that it would cost £7O per foot, but he was prepared to do it for £53. It would cost £IO,OOO, but a dredge would cost £14,000. Mr Hill was opposed te the purchase of a Wellman dredge and moved to adjourn consideration' of the report.— Mr Stumbles seconded it. Mr Flatman also opposed the purchase of a Wellmar dredge, and hoped it would soon be superceded by some new invention. The amendment was lost, only Messrs Stumbles and Hill voting for it, and the motion was carried with the words “ with the view of purchasing a Wellman dredge,” struck put.
