MOUNT PEEL ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Board was held .in the Boad Board Office, Feel Forest, on Friday last. Present —The Hon. J. B. A. Acland (Chairman),, Messrs B. Mackay, C Gr. Tripp, Q. J. Dennistoun, and E. Thew. The following correspondence was read and dealt with:—
From Mr B. Mackay. apologising fpr hi* non-attendance at last meet-
ing of the board, which occurred' through press of business, and stating that the'*-county council had determined to put the Orari traffio bridge in repair. He also referred to the valuable service rendered by the. board's deputy to the council' (Mr C. G. Tripp), in reference to .the bridge.—From the Geraldine County Council, stating it was determined at last meeting to put the Orari bridge in thorough repair for wheel traffic, in accordance with the engineer's estimate, using the present decking as far as it will go.—Resolved: " Thlat a vote of thankg be given to Mr Tripp for the able manner in 'which he represented the board at the meeting of the Geraldine County Council on the question of the Orari traffic bridge." From Mr J. H. Baker, Commissioner of Crown Lands, requesting the immediate return of the plans of roads loading to perpetual lease lands on the Opuha, as he was leaving for Wellington.—The clerk stated that the plans had been returned prior to the receipt of Mr Baker's letter.
From the Controller and AuditorGeneral, returning the balance-sheet of the board for the year ending 31st March, certified as correct. From Mr H. Boss, executor of the late A. MeMaster, requesting the board to form the road leading to section 36092, to enable him to comply w ifeh the conditions of perpetuallease tenure. —The elerk was instructed to reply, informing him that the money would be spent on the road as it accrued, and that tenders will be called at once for work equal to the amount at present available. From the manager Mount Peel station, enclosing cheque for £5 in payment for timber on road line between sections 3208 and 4035.
From the clerk Geraldine County Council, requesting a return of the receipts and expenditure of the board for the year ending 31st March last.— The Clerk stated he had supplied the information.
From Mr J, Dyke Acland, in reference to his name not being on the county roll, asking when it was first sent to the Geraldine County Council. —The clerk to reply, stating that his name was first plaeed on the rate roll of the Mount Peel district in Julyi 1869, and would consequently be forwarded to the County Council on the corrected roll in May, 1890. From Mr Henry McCully, consenting to his name being placed on the rate roll for sections 80,239 and 30,334.
From Mr Job Brown, requesting that the Dime of Mrs McMaster be substituted on the rate-roll in place of his for property lately occupied by Mr Hammond and Mr Tiney at Peel Forest.—Application to be made. The chairman proposed the following resolution, notice of which had been given at a previous meeting—- " That an account should be taken of all the property in the hands of the board, so as to show all the annual income, apart from rates, which the board can calculate receiving year by year so long as the capital is not diminished ; then,. that an estimate, based upon the rateable value of the districts spoken of as Baincliff, Clayton and Sherwood Downs, and Peel Forest, should be made, showing how much of such annual income should be appropriated te each of the three sub-districts above mentioned, as being the amount te which they are severally entitled; that a separate account be commenced for eaeh sub-district, the first charge against these accounts should be the general expenses of the office, salary of overseer, advertising, and the like, and that this should be debited to the sub-district's account in proportion to the rateable value, as above mentioned; when a general rate, is levied each sub-district's account should be credited with the amount levied in each sub-district; i that when the amount credited to any sub-district shall be entirely expended the clerk shall give notice thereof to the board, when, in the event of any ayp'licatibn for further expenditure upon roads or other works in such) sub-district, it will be for the board to consider whether they will dip into capital, or use the general funds indiscriminately, or decline to undertake the work uuless the sub-district requiring more than the amount alio ted to it eonsent to a special rate."—The motion was seconded by Mr Denmstoun, and carried.
Accounts to the amount of £25610s were passed for payment, after which the board adjourned.
