GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Geraldine County Cooncil was helh to-day, Pesent: Messrs W. Balfour (chairman), R. Maekay J* Talbot and M. Quinn. Mr Stubbs explained how the roll is made up, in May of eatb year, end corrected by the clerks of the various road boards, and he showed that though Mr Acland stated his name was on the Mount Peel roll, it was not seat to him for addition ie the county roll. Mr J. Whitehead, of Temuks, wrote in reply to a direction from the loepector to remove bis slaughter-yard from alongside the main Waitobi road, and further correspondence en the subject was read. The Inspector gave permission to try the effect of removing the piggery only. bridges. ...... The engineers reported the Tengawai Stock bridge was proceeding satisfactorily all the timber for it being now delivered. They bad been in communication with the Midland Railway Company concerning n supply of black birch timber for decking, but as yet had not received any definite answer concerning the prico at which it could be delivered ia Titnaru. Mr E. G. Stericker, Sutton Farm wrote protesting against anything being done in regard to] Lower Pareors bridge, as the river had been dry for the last three or four years, and it would be a misfortune to the ratepayers to have to pay for tnoh a luxury ai a brdga over the dry river bed. Mr Talbot moved and Mr Quinn seconded 11 That the engineer be requested to report on the condition of the Opjhi bridge witn reference to the necessity or otherwise for redecking the portion first erected j alio at to the advantage of carrying ont the redeoking longitudinal as at present or altering it to croitwite; the report to include estimate of cost.” The mover said (he bridge was under the charge of the Temuka Road Board, and their overseer, Hr Archer, stated that it was utterly impossible to keep it patched up much longer, The engineer said it wae in a vary bad and dangerous state* and but that Mr Archer bad given a great amount of attention to it, it must have been doted long ago. Ha was much in favor of cron decking in contrast with longitudinal decking. On the motion of Mr Talbot it was resolved that (be engineer invite offers by tender for the supply of black birch decking sufficient to carry ont the work at the Orari bridge and the redeoking of the Opihi bridge ; and that tenders be called for the former work, the Council supplying the timber. WAXES'BACKS. W. Gould, ranger on the Orari-Waihi races, reported|*he races all right; good flow of water. A. Qyses, ranger on the Bsugitata, reported all well in his district. The engineers reported that the Waitohi head-race was proceeding satisfactorily, the race being opened from end to end along the terrace. ' Letters from the Treaaury stated that the Waitobi water race loan was accounted a loan of 1890, and that the council could borrow £6OOO in the current, and £6OOO in the' following year, for water races. TBACXXON BHGINB BY-1 AW. The draft of a by-law to regulate the traffic of traction enginee over the bridges was produced, and held over for consideration at next meet ng. ACCOUNTS. Mr Talbot gave formal notice to move the striking of a county rate of •id in the £ for the current financial year, the rate to be payable in one sum on the 16bh August. Accounts were passed for payment amounting to £634, including a payment on account of new offices.
