LIQUOR TRAFFIC IN AUCKLAND.
The labor party has taken a new departure in , Auckland. A petition frem the merchants and laborers in Auckland to the City Licensing Committee, asking them to consider the unfit state ef eleven licensed bouses in the city, is being largely signed. They ask the Commissioners to inspect these, and insist on their reinstatement, pointing out the manifest injustice the existence of these houses iirto those who have been compelled to erect costly structures. At a meeting ot the six City Licensing Committees it was resolved to continue the visiting of the hotels as usual. Mr Gosset moved that hotelkeepers he not required to light their lamps until twelve midnight, as the street lights are burning until that hour. An amendment, however, that the matter be referred to the several Committees was carried. The Committee pledged themselves not to allow hotels to remain open after ten o’clock, the present hour of closing. Mr Porter said that complaints were made of Sunday trading on boaid vessels alongside the wharves, under packet licenses. It was resolved, on bis motion, that no packet license be granted, except ou condition that it is not made use of on Sunday. It was decided to caution licensees against allowing gambling in hotels. Mr Massefied complained that in some places adulterated liquor was sold, and the Committees resolved—•“ That the Chairman be requested to communicate with the Premier, aud ask that steps should be taken by the Government to secure the appointment of an officer to inspect intoxicating liquor.”
