LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Burglary.—A boy u-m-d Mininwai committed for trial in Chris.church last Thursday on several charges of burglary.

Prohibition Meeting at Hilton.—A meeting for the purpore of discussing Prohibition will be held at Hilton next Monday evening. Social Postponed.—The social and gift auction in connection with St. saviour’s (Lurch, Tcmuka, his been postponed until a future dite. Imposts and Exports.—The imports for ths quarter ended March amounted to £1,737,480, against £1,688,797 for the corresponding quarter of 1890.

Midland Railway.—The Cabinet will consider tbe dispute with the Midland Railway Company next week, and come to a definite determination. Commissions.—Tbe Native Commission have finished taking evidence, nd will report next week. Tbe Public Trust Commission also finish next week. School Election.—As the late elections proved unsatisfactory the Minister of Education will initiate legislation for simplifying the voting at the election of school committees. Temuka Licensing Committee.—Candidates for seats on tbe Temuka Licensing Committee must be nominated with Mr W. Wills, at the Temuka Courthouse, before oon on Monday.

1.0.G.T, Entertainment.—An anniversary public meeting will be held in tbe Temuka booial Hall next Monday evening. A number of songs and recitations and musical selections will be given, together with soma addresses by tbe Revs. Hamilton, Dallow, and Wood. Labor Troubles.—The Wellington Trades and Labour Councilhave acquiesced in tbe proposal from tlie Christchurch body that a conference from all Trades Councils in the Co ony be hold here daring the sitting of Parliament for tbe purpose of discussing the labor bills.

Rotorua Leases. —The Native Minister the work of bis predecessor w*itb regard to the Rotorua leases. Mr Cadman has personally obtained a number of signatures, and only about fifty natives out of 1100 are now standing out. Their whole interest only represents £3OO or £4OO. Football Social. —The number attending tbe football social at Temnka on Tuesday evening was accidentally omitted. Fully seventy-live couples were present. We also omitted to mention that Messrs McKinley, McLeod, and D. MoCaskill spent a considerable time in decorating and preparing tbe ball for the social.

A Pbohibitionbrs Viotokt. The Moeraki licensing district declared for prohibition, the five prohibitionist candidates being returned by an overwhelming majority. Tbe lowest prohibitionist polled two and a-bslf times as many votes as the highest moderate candidate. The district comprises % large exleot of country and a number of rising townships.

Breach of this Lioensin* Act. At the R.M. Cour', Tim»ru, yesterday, T. Psrmenter licensee of the Ship Hotel, was fined £lO sod costa for permitting drunkenness in his house on the Bth mat. The men were seen in the bar drank, but the defendant pleaded that they did not get the drink there. Notice of appeal was given. Wreck.— -The schooner Opotiki, belonging to Auckland, arrived at Napier, from Gisborne yesterday morning. In trying to make tbs entrance she got broadside on to the breakers and drifted on to tbe beacb northward of the western pier. Captain Blackwall and seamen Atkins and Wigg got asbore by a line. The vessel is now high and dry on the beacb.

Taxation. —The Government have so far progressed with tbe drawing up of the new Taxation schema as practically to have decided that the money now obtained from tbe property tax shall be raised by means of a tax on unimproved land values, with an exemption up to £SOO, and a tax on incomes with an exemption up to £3OO, Ibe amount of the latter will be 6d in the £.

Raukapuka Licensing Election.— The following persons have been nominated for the Raukapnka licensing Committee :—Moderates : Messrs G. J. Uennistoun, J. KelUnd, Allan Macdonald, W. M. Moore, R, Thaw ; prohibitionists ; Messrs W. E. Birker, F. R. Flalmao, R. Hammond, C. Jassep, A. Mackenzie, O. G. Bradley. The poll takes place on May 20th.

The immigration and emigration returns for the colony for April show the arriva's in have been 11145, and tbs riepar ores 1656, leaving a balance of 611 against the colony. The chief arrivals were—From New fejoath Wales, 590; from Victoria, 262 ; from the United Kingdom, 97. The d parturea were—To New Sou b Wales, 813; to Victoria, 355 ; to the United Kingdom, 826; to Tasmania, 60. Two Chinese arrived, sod one left during the month. County Council.— At the Geraldine County Council’s last meeting the Mount Peel Road Board wrote objecting to a proposal of ratepayers of Sherwood Downs Clayton, to be separated from Geraldine and annexed to Mackenzie County. The. council agreed to the issue of slaughterhouse licenses to Messrs W. A. Nalder, Pleasant Valley, H. Holmes, Hi ton, and J. Lee, Epworth. On resuming after lunch the council considered the state of the finances. The credit balance was £341, and the accounts for the day £360, so that they would be £2O in debt afrer the meeting. It appeared, the chairman said, that a Jd rate would be necessary, which would produce £3160, and it would be necessary to arrange with the bank for an overdraft, and also for advances against' the Waitohi water supply loan, ?

Retrenchment.—Seven clerks in ths head office of i.he Government Life Insurance have been retrenched. Their salaries aggregate over £IOOO, and (he compensation to be paid them will amount to £7OO. .Narrow Escape. A Family named at Clive. hive hid a narrow escape. Water in which arsenic bad been mixed for gardening purposes, was used to mike tea, and nil the family were taken dangerously il. Village Settlements.—The Government have arranged for tire blocks of land on Catlin's River railway, Otago, to be sol apart for village settlement purposes, the probability being that the men engaged on the contract will take up the land on the completion of the work.—Surveyors in the Waimrapa district are looking out for suitable land to be devoted to a similar purpose. *

Franks, and Gore; emergencies, H. Robinson, O. Btowo. and J. Aiiken. Threshing Dispute.—ln Timaru last Wednesday Douglas and Washington sued P. Connell for £l7, tbe circumstances being as folowa—The plaintiffs contracted with the defendant to thresh 4000 bushels of oats at 2£d per bushel, but when they went there they found that Mr SoaunelTs machine was doing the work* The plaintiffs therefore sued Connell for the amount stated, the prefit which they alleged they would have made out of the job had tbe contract been carried out* The defendant admitted the contract, but said he broke it because Mr Bateman told him the plaintiffs would not make a job of it. Ha then gave it to Mr Scannall. After several witnesses wete examined the R.M. reserved hia decision.

Impending Lawsuits.— Mr John Campbell, recently aequictad of the charge of sheep stealing, has instituted legal proceedings against Mr J. P. Wooding for £45 13s, value of tbe sheep in dispute. The sheep wore taken by tbe police, and given up to Mr Wooding, who, though Mr Campbell was acquitted of stealing them, atiil c aims them as Ms own. Mr Wooding alleges tbe sheep were bis, that Mr Campbell shore them, and be has taken a cross-action against him for £23 4«, se the value of the clip.—Mr Cbas, Bishop,ot Winchester,has sued Aleaers.Brown, Blytb, and Miles for wrongful imprisonment. In ihis case some twelve mouths ago Mr Bishop sold out, and his creditors toek proceedings against him, and bad him imprisoned. He obtained jedgtneut against Mr Ackroyd for £4O some time ago, and is now going for tbe other creditors, The Indian Juggler. — The Timaru Herald says J —“ We may add that Abdool Abumnd yesterday received a letter from tbe Governor of Bydney, before whom he gaye a private performance a few weeks ago at Government Hpuse, thank ng him for the entertainment' provided, and enclosing a cheque for * substantial amount as a souvenir,,” W e may add to this that ho will appear in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, next Monday evening, when he will give an entirely now entertainment. It will be “ very clever," and in addition he will give away valuab.e gifts. On Tuesday evening he wilt app ar in Geraldine. Ob this the people of Geraldine can rely. Ha intended to have played ac Geraldine lasi; Monday evening, but finding that a 1 prohibition meeting was to have been, held, and that tbe place was in the throws of an election contest, he decided to defer his visit until naxt Tuesday, when he will positively appear.

The Railway Commission* as. The Railway Commissioners and the M nister of Public Works are at loggerheads. The Minister asked them why they had sent Homo for railway plant when it could be done in the colony. They re : lied that it could not, but ho reiterated the inquiry, and asked on what grounds they did o'her things. They declined to explain. In Auckland the Minister said it was a most extraordinary position that these men could defy the people in this way. Without consulting the Government or Parliament they bad sent an order Home for work which could be done in the o.olohy, and they would ask Parliament to pay. He said also that the plant had greatly reduced in. vu.ua in their hands, and the rates had been increased by 25 per cent, i'liia tbe Commissioners deny it, and there the nutter ends for the present, but it is very likely they will experience rough weather when Parliament meets.

The Midland Railway.— A largelyattended meeting of the r«ii way committee held at Greymuuth passed tbe;.followiog rfsolutioo ; “ Having considered Mr Seddon’s different telegrams re the deviation diffio'slty, this meeting is of opinion that the only objection the Minister has to recommend assent is tint the ooonty council haa not yet complied with the terms of the Act of 1890, by entering into a contract with the Midland Company to widen the road, bridges and culverts, from Pounamu to Lake Brunner, and provide a steamer. The meeting requests His Worship (he Mayor to telegraph to the Hon. Mr Seddon, and ask whether be will advise the Governor to give his assent immediately to the deviation without waiting fer Parliament to meet, if the county council aomply with the terms of the Act and Mr Seddon’s letter to the OOUHOII, daied May 2od last.” A resolution, thanking the Christchurch Railway League foi assistance and 00-operatioo wai also parried unanimously.

Geraldine Literary and Debating Society.'—An adjourned mseting of the Geraldine Literary and Debating Society takes place on Monday evening next, and as two important motions are to be dealt with a fail attendance is requested.
