THE ORARI BRIDGE.
We congratulate our Mount Feel readers on having at last secured the redecking of the Orari bridge; we also congratulate the majority of the members of the County Council on their good sense in complying with the urgent wishes of the great majority of the peoplej and we specially congratulate Mr u. G. Tripp, to whose energy and perseverance the securing of such an advantage is mainly due. As regards the opponents of the bridge, it is worthy of note that Mr Howell has been frequently accused of not being so very particular about money being spent on bridges which aford convenience to himself. It is true also, we believe, that Mr James Guild is promoting a petition te get a bridge placed on the Orari, near the railway bridge. To this we have no objection to offer, but if it is true, as we have been assured it is, that he is the chief promoter of the latter work, how can be reconcile it with his opposition to the upper Orari bridge. We are afraid that in this colony we allow selfishness to overcloud our sense of justice too frequently, and that consequently we disregard the necessities of others so long as our own wants are supplied. The Orari bridge is a great necessity to the district ia which it is situated, and it is only pure selfishness could blind men to this fact while at the same time recognising that bridges are wanted in their own neighborhood. We have nothing to say against the proposed new bridge—it is said to be very much wanted—but it is unreasonable to propose to close an old bridge while at the same time proposing to open a new one, without which the people interested have so far lived.
