Melbourne, May 8. While the Craigburn was being towed clear of the Heads the rope broke and the vessel drove s'owly ashore, despite her anchors being letdown, the second vessel which has come to grief.is the Joseph Scannell, from New York. She struck on the reef, and the Queensoliff lifeboat has ben unable to reach her. Tugs have gone to the redef of both'ships, ; The ship Joseph Scannel 1 , from N-w York, which was total 1 ? wrecked near ‘he Cape,was valued a', £IO,OOO, and (he, cargo at £60,000. The boars in which the crew saved their lives were lowered with great difficulty. The four-masted ship Craigturn came ashore during the night. Fourteen of the crew left the ship ir-t one boat and stood out to s j a. Fifteen in another host attempted to land on the b nch, but the boat capsized four times and five of the occupants were drowned, Togs were sent to help but lh« captain refused to allow them to tow the vessel off. The pilot locked th > captain iu his cabin but the carpenter refused to get up steam on the winches, 'lbe tugs couJd do nothing and the pilot left, »nd the vessel broke up. The captain and carpenter came ashore on a line shot by the rocket brigade, but the mate was drowned.
