GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of this board was held yesterday. Present —Messrs F. B. Flatman (Chairman), K. Brophy, W. Deßenzy, J. Kelland, and A. Metcalf. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows From the Returning Officer, Mr Sbiers, notifying the board that Messrs Flatman, Brophy, and Deßenzy had been re-elected to the board. From Mr James Finn, asking for the name of Mr A. Reid to be substituted for his upon the roll for part of reserve 1190 —Granted. Prom Mr C, M. Brooke, quoting prices for poisoned wheat.—Left with the clerk to arrange for what was required. From Mr W. A. Nalder, Woodside, asking the board to sanction his taking out a license for a slaughterhouse on R.S. 6872 to enable him to kill for his men.—Granted. From Mr E. P. Sealey, asking for the name of Mr M, C Orbell to be substituted for his upon the rate roll for Ellerslie farm, Hilton. —Mr ’ Orbell’s consent to be obtained. From Mr H. Wreathall, asking the board to cut the scrub on the road leading from the Kakahu Bush school to his section, also to have the ruts filled in.—Dealt with in the overseer’s report. From the manager of the Bank of New South Wales, Geraldine, advising the board of the bank having paid the rates due on Mr B. Bayley’s property, £l2 17s.
From Mr 0. H. Verity, offering to lease the board’s reserve adjoining the Geraldine Dairy Factory. —lt was decided to charge 25s per annum, payable 10 advance, Mr Verity to use the reserve (dr sheep only, to remove them if any damage was done to the t From Mr E. W. Carver, Geraldine, one of the baard’s tenants, asking the board to erect a porch over the back door.—Granted. From Mr E. H. Foster, asking for the road fn m the west of Mr Squire’s land to applicant’s bush sectiqn to be made passable to allow of Mr Kimbell and himself working their bush sections.--Mr Sbiers to report. From the clerk of the Geraldine County Council requesting the pay- . ment of June 1, 1891, of the first moiety of the board’s contributions to the Timaru Harbor Board, £123 7s 7d, and Charitable Aid Board, £BS 5s. — Passed for payment. From the Mount Peel Boad Board, advising the board that the Hon. J. B. A. A eland and Mr C. G. Tripp had been appointed a deputation to wait upon the Geraldine County Council re the proposition to close the Orari Traffic Bridge. From Mr P. H. McSbane, objecting to the board granting Mr Deßenzy permission to put a grating in the culvert on the swamp road, He contended that a short time ago the grating was removed and a new culvert to deepen and give better fall to the drain was made. He strongly protested against the grating being erected, and stated he would use eyery means in his power to have it removed. —The board decided not to put a grating upon the culvert permanently, so long as Mr McShano kept the debris from coming down the drain.— Mr Deßenzy withdrew his objection to the grating being placed on the this understanding. A letter to be sent to McShhne on this understanding. 'I he balance-sheet of the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was laid upon the table. — Members considered the sending out of such balance-sheets was a step in the right direction, but thought the suggestions of the board on individual cases receiving assistance in their district should be more fully considered by the Charitable Aid Board.
STOATS AN# From the I£owai Road Board, enclosing a copy of a resolution passed by the board as follows “ That the clerk be instructed to write to the member for the d strict requesting him to communicate with the Minister of Lands and Agriculture with a view to prohibit the farther importation of ferrets, stoats, 1 and into'^he
country. And further, that the clerk be instructed to write to at least one Hoad Board in each electoral district in Canterbury, asking them to use their influence with their member with a view to bringing about combined action to stop the importation of the pest.” The members were unanimously of opinion that the stoats and weasels were a complete pest in an agricultural district, whatever they might be in a pastoral district. Mr Brophy thought the board should communicate with their member, Mr Rhodes, with a view to getting a stop put to the importation of the pests. It was moved by Mr DeEenxy, seconded by Mr Kelland, and carried unanimously, “ That this board endorse the resolution passed by the Rowai Road Board on the 6th March, and are of opinion that the further importation of stoats, weasels, and ferrets should be prohibited, and that this board forward the resolution to Mr A. E. G-. Rhodes, M.H.R.” ovbeseee's reboex. The overseer’s report was read and dealt with as follows Sir.—l have the honor to report for the information of the board for the month ending date as under — Contracts.—The following have been completed since last board meeting. No., 1. Shingling, etc,, Main Roads, etc., Waitohi Elat; No., 2, driving iron rails, Waihi river bed; No 3, delivery of feed oats. Owing to the continued fine weather and office duties requiring my attention, very little outside work has been done during the past month. The undermentioned roads have been attended to: Road and bridge track Waihi Gorge, Gapes’ Yalley Road, Hilton and Boundary Road, Pleasant Yalley and Geraldine Downs, and others, Mr Wreathall’s application.—As instructed I have inspected this line of road, which extends 35 chains from the main road leading up the valley by the bush. About 25 chain runs through thick manuka scrub up the face of a very steep hill. To clear the scub about 20ft wide and make a narrow dray track so as to give access to the land, from the main road would cost Reserves—! have issued fencing material for the road frontages of two grayel reserves in the Orari district, astheowners of the adjoining land lately taken from the Crown were about to fence ia the same. Iron Rails—l have the offer of four or five toes of good iron rails, and as we have used up what we had in stock I thiak it would be desirable to accept the offer of the above at cost price.— I am, etc,, W. Shiebs, Overseer. It was decided to grant Mr Wreathall’s application; to accept the iron rails offered. (JOESE ON EOADS. The never-ending question of gorse upon roads was again brought up. The members were unanimous in the opinion that stringent measures should be adopted to compel landholders to clear their gorse. After n short discussion it was unanimous!}
decided to take legal proceedings against those who had not grubbed their gorse, or made good progress with the grubbing, by next meeting. The clerk was instructed to give the requisite notices, and the board would take action at their next meeting. MISCS liLANEOUS. Mr Kelland asked to be allowed to plough the side of the road in front of his property, Gapes’ Talley, to destroy gorse,—Granted. It was decided to get the latest copies of Badger’s Ratepayers Guide, ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £30312s lOd were passed for payment and the meeting terminated,
