THE MANIPUR DISASTER.
Calcutta, April 14. Severe fighting has taken place be'ween the British troops and the rebel Mirouzai for possession of Hatnaoa Ridge* The Mohammedan moliabs on the frontier ate preaching a Jehad (floly War) against, British aa'horiiy, but the Affordes are still hesitating to join the, rebds. The officers of the British detachmeet who were captured by the Manipuris were speared, and dismembered in the presence of the whole (orce. April 15. The bangle iu connection with Lieuttenant Grant's ammunition when he was beseiged at Tanal was dae to the fact that the reserves at the B'itieh Residency were only intended for Martin*-Henry rifles. On the arrival of Commissioner Quinton’s escort it was found that they were armed with Sniders, and, consequently, the reserve stock was of no use to them. Details to hand show that Mrs Grimwood, the wife of the British resident at Manipur, acted with great heroism after the evacuation of the residency, and it was mainly through her guidance that the refugees were enabled to make their escape. The punitive expedition on the war to Manipur is 3 ©CO strong.
