AUSTRALIAN MARKET^. Melbourne. A pril 8
Considerable sensation has been created by the publication of thp Government agricultural statistics. The Australasian estimate was 17,985,150 bushels from 1,200,000 acres; or very close on 18,000,000 bushels, while the Government estimate is about 50,000 less in acreage, and only a fraction over 13,000,000 bushels as regards yield, Mr Hayter’s estimate is therefore 5,000,000 bushels less thau that of the Australasian, which agreed with that made by the other papers. The importance of tbe matter is shown by the fact that; if the Government estimate is only approximately correct, the market becomes merely an intercolonial market, and beyond the engagements entered into no further shipments can be made to Europe; Under the influence of the Governs ment figures the market has taken an upward bound. Prices had been ruling fairly steady at 3s lid, but. yesterday sales were made at 4s 9d, and holders were asking ss. When tbe Press figures were first published sales were made as low as 3s 4d, so that buyers at this rate who still hold are now in a good position. (
