GERALDINE TOWN BOARD,
The usual monthly meeting ot this board was held on Tuesday evening last. Present Messrs A. White (chairman), W S Maslin, J Williams, A Sherratt, and E Hammond. An apology for non-attendance was received from Mr Dunlop,
' CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt wit* l as follows : Prom Messrs Smithson, Eaymond, and Smith, forwarding certain leases for the board’s seal to be affixed. — The chairman was authorised to affix the seal. Prom the same, stating that they had that day obtained judgment against the trustees of the "Volunteer Drill’.Shed for the rates due. They had applied to Mr Pearpoint for the amount, who stated that the trustees would not pay it. The firm advised the board as to the best course to pursue under the circumstances, and it was decided to act accordingly. From Mr W, King, stating that three fourths of the amount of his rate was due on the school reserve which he had given up to the Board of Education in January 1890, and asking the board to remit that amount.—lt was pointed out that Mr King had not notified the board of the change before the rate was struck, and consequently he was liable for the full amount. Under the eireunutanees, however, it was decided to remit three fourths of it, Prom Mr J. Webb, asking for the name of Mr W. A. Sherratt to be substituted for his upon the rate roll for section 3, D.P. 14 —The application being endorsed by Mr Sherratt was granted. Prom Mr W. Colbert with regard to the property for which he was rated, stating that a portion of it was his sons. —As no request to transfer the name was contained in the letter the board decided to take no action. Prom Mr J, O’Eourke, enclosing the amount of bis rate, which he paid under pretest, as he had disposed of bis property some time ago through Messrs J. Mundell and Co, He asked to have the new owner put on the roll. —Members remarked that the hoard was not in the position of a private detective to keep track ol people’s private transactions with theii E property, and if persons did not apph | to have their names altered they musi
! expect to pay the rate. The clerk ; was instructed to make enquiry from Messrs Mundell and Co., and if the letter was found to be correct to place the present owner upon the roll. Prom Messrs Woollcombe & Clulee, Timaru, in reply to a demand from the board's solicitors, enclosing two years' rate on Mrs itf. E. Taylor's property, Geraldine. Prom Mr GK Ward, asking for the name of Janet Ward to be placed upon the rate roll in lieu of his for section 9, D.P. 33.—The application being endorsed the transfer was ordered to be made. The ranger's report for the month was read.—The clerk was instructed to return it to him to have the number of offences marked upon it. OUTSTANDING HATES. The clerk stated that the whole of the rales due for 1890-91 were now ! collected, with the exception of £1 2s Bd. They had that morning got judgment for 18s 9d of that amount, leaving a balance of 8s lid outstanding. This was due by seven absentees, whose addresses were unknown, and there was no prospect of getting this sum. A resolution complimenting the clerk upon the manner in which he had collected the rate was passed, and ordered to be phvced upon the minutes. OYBRSEER'S REPORT. The overseer's report was read. It was decided to obtain prices for 200 feet of 12in pipes, the chairman to accept the tender; to notify Messrs Woollcombe and Olnlee that their tenant was allowing the gorse to grow upon the footpath, and ask them to have it cleared; to obtain a now stone j hammer; and for the Works Com-) mittee to sell the battens taken up from the footpaths. THE WATER RACE. The chairman stated that Mr Bherratt and himself had inspected the water race as far as the flume. They advised the piping of the race at one or two leaks. VOLUNTEER HALL, '1 he license fee due upon the Volunteer Hall still remained unpaid. It was unanimously resolved that if the license was not paid at once legal proceedings be taken for its recovery, and an information be laid against the trustees for allowing the hall to be used for public meetings without being licensed. Attention was called to Mr Pearpoints persistent refusal to remove the bull from the park when requested to do so, and it was unanimously decided that he should be prosecuted for a breach of the by-laws. Members stated that they had no wish to be hard upon Mr Pearpoint, but his persistent defiance of the whole board could not be tolerated. TRANSFER OP LEASE. Mr Maslin asked for the board's consent for a transfer of part of the lease of Reserve 755 to Messrs Mundell & Co., which was granted. OUTSTANDING RENT. The clerk was instructed to take action for the recovery of the rent of one tenant long overdue, ualessf the same were paid by the end of the month. LAMP. Mr White applied on behalf of the school for a lamp in front of the public school. The board decided they had not the funds to erect any new lamps. ACCOUNTS. Accouuts amounting to £2l 19s 4d were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
