Messrs Cooper and Darroch waited upon the board and presented a petition from a number of ratepayers respectfully asking the board to consider the advisability of asphalting the east side of the main road from Mr D, Henry’s shop northward. Mr Darroch said that other ratepayers would have signed the petition, but some were away. All were of opinion that the main street footpaths should be asphalted before side streets.

Thb chairman said it was a question of funds. The board were always anxious to meet the wishes ot the ratepayers in respect of permanent improvements. The deputation then withdrew. The board then discussed the question, and went into the matter of finance. . Mr Storey said that the board were there to do the best they could for the greater number of ratepayers, and he thought that the Main South Eoad should be asphalted first. He would move __“ That the footpath from Wood Street to the corner of Ewen Eoad be asphalted half width.” Mr Clinch drew attention to the fact that there had already been a petition from the ratepayers in respect of the asphalting of Railway Terrace. The chairman said that it might be possible by straining a point to do both pieces. Mr Mason thought there might be works of emergency that would cause a drain upon the board’s resources not now calculated upon, and he thought that a very fair share of asphalting had been already done, considering the income of the board. He also pointed out the probability of bad weather setting in. Mr Clinch would like to see both works let in one contract. Mr Storey again urged the claims of the main road, and thought it would be a pity to neglect this necessary work for the sake of Railway Terrace. Mr Mason moved “That owing to the small amount of funds at their disposal, and also owing to the lateness of the season for properly carrying out asphalting the board regret they cannot see their way to accede to the request of the petitioners,” Seconded by Mr Clinch and carried, Mr Storey dissenting. oybeseeb's eepobt. He had had pipes put down a few chains further north and the cutting filled up. The asphalting contract had been completed and the repairs carried eut. Since last meeting 4 dogs had been registered. Several more ought to be forthcoming. More than half the rates were still unpaid. The nuisance of horses and cattle on the streets still continued. The asphalting was injured every night by their trespassIt was resolved that Mr C. Storey be supplied with 9in pipes, and be allowed at the scale rate for good Bin ones returned. It was resolved to take proceedings against 12 defaulting ratepayers, whose names appeared on list submitted if their rates be not paid within 7 days. Some discussion arose as to the cattle nuisance, and the advisability of appointing a ranger was mentioned. '•he overseer instanced a case of a man cutting green fodder and throwing it over to feed his cattle.
