ACCIDENTS, FATALITIES, ETC.

Auckland, March 20. Mark Rawlings, secretary and treasurer of the Parnell Orphan Home, was found guilty at the Supreme Court of embezzling £SO belonging to that institution, and also of the larceny as a bailee of £66 of the moneys of the home. Four other charges fell through on technical grounds. He was sentenced to 3 years’ imprisonment. Waipawa, March 19.

A man named W. Coles was found dead on the main road near Wanstead. At the inquest the verdict was that he died of, excessive drinking and exposure. Wellington, March 19. A fatal accident occurred at Cable’s Lion Foundry this morning. John W. McKenzie, engineer and foreman of the works, was overhead, engaged in shifting a travelling crane, when he missed his footing. In his descent he caught hold of a driving rope, and was dashed against the wall of the office. He was picked up unconscious, and sent to the hospital, but expired without recovering consciousness. The base of . bis skull was fractured, it is supposed through striking an iron column. McKenzie, who was a married man with five children, came out as chief engineer of the Government steamer Stella, and for some years held a similar position in the Hinemoa. Dunedin, March 20.

Geo. Ellis Robertson, 3i years of age, son of the superintendent of the Fire Brigade, was run over yesterday by a dray loaded with sand, and killed.
