RIFLE SHOOTING.
On Thursday last the Government medal annually given for competition by marksmen was competed for on the Temuka range by members of the South Canterbury Battalion, The train services were not very convenient, and only a comparatively few marksmen could be present. . Neither the Ashburton or Geraldine coips were represented, but Waimate sent two men. The Temuka corps furnished three competitors, and the remainder were from Timaru. The conditions were Government targets and scoring, 10 shots each at 200, 300 and 500 yards, standing, kneeling and lying down. The day wa? not very favorable for good shooting. Towards noon it was very hot, but there were nasty fitful gusts of wind which made accurate shooting almost impossible, Colonel Bailey superintended the firing, and he was assisted by Drill Instructor Sergt.Major Jones. The following are the seores:—
Sergt, Whitehead thus has the honor of winning the medal. Volunteer M'Donald, North Dunedin Hifles, won the medal for the district of Otago with a score of 85.
