Auckland, March 17. John Hopper, aged 86, dropped dead of heart disease last evening in the garden of his residence, Esse? street, while talking to his wife. James Bray, of Mount Eden, is reported missing at Helensyille. It is supposed be was drowned as a splash was heard and' some one called Oh my God.”‘
Gisborne, March 17. A. laborer named Frank W. 'lhompson went into the sea to bathe at five last night, and at seven o’clock his clothes were found on the beach, and on search being made hia dead, body was found in the surf. Palmerston North, March 17.
The train from Wellington last evening was run into by several trucks which were being shunted at Longburn, , and three carriages filled with passengers were thrown off the line and narrowly escaped being overturned. The remainder of the train in consequence was two hours late in arriving here. Hawera, March 17.
Mary Ann Tiller, of Hawaiki, a half-caste, has been arrested on a charge of bigamy in having married one Matheson, Tiller, her husband, being alive. Hokitika, March 17. By a buggy accident at Kumara last night five . persons .sustained injuries more or less serious. Constable Bird was badly cut and bruised, and was removed to the hospital. John Hayes was rendered unconscious. Three children escaped more luckily, getting off with a few bruises. Christchurch, March 17.
Mi J. B. Gresson, solicitor, Christchurch, met with a fatal accident near Southbrook this morning. He was seated on the platform of the north train with his face to the engine, and was suddenly observed to fall. The train pulled up a few chains further on, and Mr Gresson was found lying insensible on the metal. The wheels of one carriage and the guard’s van had passed oyer his shoulder. He soon after regained consciousness and was removed to Kangiora, where he died at half-past twelve. Invercargill, : March 17. A skull, supposed to be that of Quill, who was lost from a survey party some weeks ago, has been found in a water course at the top of the Oleddan Yalley. The skull was lying at the foot of a cliff about 2000 feet .high. It was found by the brothers Quill.
