CHARGE AGAINST A CLERGYMAN.
Sydney, February 23. Some weeks ago the Rev. C. Wright, late Incumbent of St Clement’s Church, Marraokville, disappeared from his hom« and no trace could be found until yesterday of his whereabouts. It was soon ascertained that be was in serious financial difficulties, and had resorted to.some very questionable methods for raising! money. He had victimised a bookseller, who issued a warrant for him, and the police arrested him at Newcastle. He had attempted to disguise himself by shaving off his beard arid dressing himself in a blue serge suit. He had been sojourning at various lodging! houses in the city and district for the lasti ten days; While confessing to his guilt he broke dowti completely, and said that he had .been very miserable since he left. Sydney. He had only : a few shillings in the world and had tried to go back to his parish but his 'eourage had always fail-d him. One of the Severest of his swindles -was perpetrated on some money lenders in Sydney. On the pretext thatthe Bishop iws» coming to.stay with him for a day he ■borrowed several good articles of furniture from the wealthier members of ihe congregation, and then, having arranged the furniture in his house, he exhibited it to the money lenders as the securities on which he wished to raise a loan. The amount asked for was not excessive, considering the value of the furniture, and as soon as the nior ey had been advanced be returned ; the borrowed articles to his pari-hionrrs with a grateful note of thanks.
