TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the above board was held on Tuesday, Present —Messrs J. Talbot (chairman), J. Eraser, W. Snell, and C. Bissett COUEESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: From Property Tax Department, asking for forma to be filled up i entitling boacd to receive subsidy upon rates collected, and stating that no rates were now payable upon Crown and Native lands. From Mr William Tarrant, applying for two new bridges on Paterson's road sand Canal drain road.—The bridges applied lor gave access to certain paddocks. '1 he board briefly reviewed their position as to their liability in respect to these bridges, which were now being used for the passage of traction engines.—lt was decided to .obtain legal advice upon the point, action in the meantime to be deferred. The overseer Btated that the bridges in question tfsre in very bad repair, and the chairman reminded members that all similar applications 2?aa been granted as far as the supply of tiiiiogr was concerned. —It was then resolved to supply timber for the bridges, applicants to find labor and construct same to overseer's satisfaction, From Mr B. Lee, asking that bis name be lemoved from the rol! in respect of 35 acres, part.U.S. 6383,
and that of; J. E. Ackroyd substituted, —Mr Ackroyd agreed, and the necessary alteration was ordered to be made.
From the clerk Geraldine County Council, asking to be supplied with 4 maps of the road district, and enquiring price.—To be supplied at half cost.
From Mr, A. Gynes, Rangitata, stating that his land had been revalued at 25s per acre, and stating that this would reduce his valuation by £lO. He was prepared to pay rates upon reduced amount.—Mr Bissett explained that the applicant had taken advantage o£ the Settlers Eegulation Act.—Applicant to be informed that he would require to pay upon old valuation until next Property Tax Valuation.
From J. R. Pussell, Crown Lands Ranger, stating that he had been instructed to report upon the small birds' nuisance, and asking the board what steps bad been taken in the matter, and what action was considered most effective. —The board had distributed poisoned grain at a third of its cost, and had also expended a considerable sum in the purchase of eggs. (Detailed statement of cost to be furnished by clerk). The measures, though costly, had appeared to be of little use aa far as the abatement of the nuisance was concerned. ovebseee's bepoet.
The overseer's report was read and dealt with as follows : '•To the Ohairman, " Sir, -I have the honor to report as follows:
.*' The contractor for coatraot No. 35, formation, Khodes' Island, haa not yet commenced this work, although the time granted at last meeting has expired. Contract No. 36, deepening drain and repairing road between reserves 938 and 939, is not yet completed. The contractor for this work is engaged harvesting. Part of the Canal Drain (Orari Swamp) has been cleaned, and about sixteen chains of the drain on upper side of Rolleston's road. The principal work done during the month has ba»n the rebuilding of the first bridge on the Middle Swamp road, With the exception of the abutments this bridge has been entirely renewed. A large timber culvert on the Upper Swamp road, near the Bouth branch of the Ohapi creek, has given way, and requires to be taken out and replaced with a concrete culvert, or otherwise dealt with as the board may decide. This culvert is in an old watercourse that takes a great part of the overflow when the creek rises. The cost of a concrete culvert that would carry rather more water than the present one would be about £—. Some shingle repairs are required on dyne's road. A great many of the drain crossings, the timber for building which has been supplied by the board, are now giving way, and during the month I have been applied to for timber to renew five of them. 1 would ask instructions as to supplying timber to renew these crossings. Mr Hayhurst has put an open ford in Clyne's road, instead of the pipe culvert for which permission was granted at last meeting.— i have, etc., "¥. Akcheb." It was decided to relet the contract forfeited by Mr Brosnahan. It was resolved to put in a 3ft barrel eoncret culvert at the Ohapi road in place of timber repairs. The matter of shingle for repairs was left to the oyeraeer. Mr Hayhurst having taken his race across the Milford road by open ford in place of pipes as arranged at last meeting, it was decided that the overseer draw Mr Hayburat'a attention to the deviation from the board's resolution, and state that the ford was objected to, and that pipes must be put in. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £62 12s 5d were passed for payment. The meeting then terminated.
