Auckland, February 20, The body of a man named Lionel Whitney, one of the missing boating party for which search parties were out, has been found on the beach at Wairoa South. He was a young man of twenty-two years, and a son of Captain Whitney, of the Colonial Ammunition Factory, Feb. 22. A child seventeen months old, 3 daughter of a settler named Ritter, has been drowned near Russell. February 23. Maude Murphy, a girl of fourteen, was drowned at Motutapu on Saturday. She accompanied a picnic party of Collins Bros.’employes on the steamer Maori, and was one of seventeen who were being conveyed ashore in the dingy when the little boat upset. The others were saved. Wellington, February 23. The body of Mrs Bailey, wife of a coach driver at Otaki, was found in a creek near Otaki yesterday. She had been missing the last few days, and it is supposed to be a case of suicide. Geeymouth, February 20. A cottage in Camp street, Ahaura, was burnt this afternoon while the owner was absent. It is probable that an enquiry will be held. Reeeton, February 21. E, Blackmore, trainer for Messrs Hobbs, of Timaru, met with an accident this morning. While galloping Psyche round the racecourse without shoes, the ground being damp, the horse came d)wn, and fell on her rider, breaking bis left arm, a compound fracture. Waimate, February 21, To-day at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Waimate, James Gray, on remand, was charged with feloniously and violently assaulting and committing a rape upon upon Eliza Slodden at Waitaki North on the 27th January last. Inspector Thomson conducted the case. Mr J. W. White appeared for the prisoner. The ease was heard with closed doors. After hearing the evidence of Dr Barclay and of Mrs and Eliza Slodden the bench dismissed the information and discharged the prisoner. Dunedin, February 20. Mr McNidder, an engineer in the employ of Messrs Sparrow and Company, was killed on the Frank ton Company’s dredge. Kawarau, this morning.
